Valentina Shevchenko and Joanna Jedrzejczyk to fight for vacant flyweight title

UFC president Dana White appeared on TSN’s Sportscentre on Thursday night and announced that the vacant UFC flyweight championship will be decided in a fight between Valentina Shevchenko and former strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 231 in Toronto.

UFC president Dana White appeared on TSN’s Sportscentre on Thursday night and announced that the vacant UFC flyweight championship will be decided in a fight between Valentina Shevchenko and former strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 231 in Toronto.

The championship was recently rendered vacant by the organization after inaugural champion Nicco Montano was unable to weigh-in for her pending bout with Shevchenko at UFC 228 earlier this month. Montano was forced to go to the hospital and there was a concern about kidney problems if she continued her attempt to make weight and the fight was pulled. Dana White declared the championship was vacant after news of the fight cancelation.

Shevchenko and Jedrzejczyk have a history together, having fought three times in amateur kickboxing between 2006-08. The two fought at 57 kilograms (125 pounds) with Shevchenko winning by decision in each of their three contests.

Jedrzejczyk held the UFC’s strawweight championship from March 2015 until November 2017 amassing five title defenses before losing the championship to Rose Namajunas by a first-round stoppage at UFC 217 last year. Jedrzejczyk received a rematch with Namajunas this past April and lost by unanimous decision and snapped her two-fight losing streak with a decision victory over Tecia Torres in July.

The title fight is slated for Saturday, December 8th at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario at UFC 231.
