CM Punk: “2021 when I came back, I went with the devil I didn’t know instead of the devil I knew”

Punk touches on a number of topics.

Night one of WWE WrestleMania 41 is going to be headlined by a Triple Threat match that’ll see CM Punk versus Roman Reigns versus Seth Rollins. Reigns’ wiseman Paul Heyman will be accompanying Punk to the ring and cornering him.

Going into the show, Punk is making the media rounds and he stopped past the The Ringer Wrestling Show. While speaking about his comeback, he stated that when he returned in 2021 under the All Elite Wrestling banner, he went with the devil he didn’t know as opposed to the devil he knew.

I kind of took a gamble whereas, you know, in like, what was it? 2021 when I came back, I went with the devil I didn’t know instead of the devil I knew.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Punk revealed that WWE is trying to get him to sign a five-year contract.

To me, my mind’s never been sharper, I’ve never been more focused and there is life in wrestling beyond taking bumps and being in the ring so, we’ll see what happens… They’re trying to get me to sign a five-year deal. So I look at that and I go, guys, uh, I don’t know.

He dove into the conversation about main eventing WrestleMania. Punk stated that if it was up to him, the Women’s World Title Triple Threat involving Rhea Ripley, Bianca Belair and the champion IYO SKY would be closing the show. Punk feels his mindset could be detrimental as a booker because he’d be putting his feelings before business.

There definitely is and perspective is everything and people will constantly, I think, cherry-pick things that I have said. I’m sure they — and such is me — they do it for everybody. ‘Oh! You said this one time 15 years ago’ and it’s just like, ‘Well, yeah, and I said it then and I meant it then and 15 years now, the context isn’t there and certain things have changed and it doesn’t necessarily apply.’ I’m very much a title match main event, right? Here’s the soundbite all those f*cking losers are gonna steal and put on their Twitter is if it was up to me, believe it or not, Rhea (Ripley), Bianca (Belair) and IYO (SKY) would be the main event. I’m not saying which night. You see what I’m saying (he laughed)? But, I can tell you that if I was in Triple H’s spot, I would gravitate towards that. My reasoning for that is when’s IYO ever gonna get another chance? Bianca’s done it already. It’d be great if she got to do it again. Rhea hasn’t done (it) but Rhea 100 percent. You look at people and you say, ‘WrestleMania main eventer,’ Rhea Ripley’s the top of the list. So, I almost look at it more that mindset I have of, it’s a detriment as a booker because I might not be putting business in front of my feelings. I’m putting my feelings in front of business. I think all three of those ladies are so supremely talented. I know they’re gonna steal the show and I want to see my friends and my colleagues accomplish things and it doesn’t so much matter to me if I accomplish them. I know what it feels like to have that chip on my shoulder to be like, ‘This is my year, right? I’ve done this for 11.5 months’ and then somebody comes in and goes, nope, nope and you’re just kind of like, okay and happens year after year and it gets a little much but, yeah so, here I am arguing against myself. It’s funny how life works. I never thought I would’ve been saying any of that stuff like 10 years ago but I also think it’s kind of indicative of our locker room and the embarrassment of riches that we have talent-wise that so many different people could be that main event. GUNTHER, Jey (Uso), Cody (Rhodes) obviously. Nobody’s gonna tell me that John Cena shouldn’t be main eventing WrestleMania at his last Mania. Stay vigilant everybody and bust your ass and if it’s meant to be, it’ll come to pass and I’m obviously living, breathing proof of that.

Friday Night SmackDown is the final slate of programming before WrestleMania 41 and there is going to be a review of that show here on POST Wrestling.
