The Standard vs. The Upgrade

Smackdown from Savannah, GA, kicked off with the usual wrestler entrances when Damian Priest interrupted Drew McIntyre, and a brawl ensued. Officials separated them as the show cut to the entrance of WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton.

Stratton spoke about how she was walking into Money in the Bank last year at this time, but now she was the champion. She was about to address the eventual winner of this year’s MITB when Alexa Bliss interrupted and introduced herself to Stratton. Charlotte Flair then interrupted and attempted to speak, but was heavily booed. Flair said she had done everything in this business except win Money in the Bank. Stratton called both Flair and Bliss “vintage” and that they were “the standard” and she was “the upgrade”, and with that, left the ring. This brought out Giulia, who had a brief staredown with Stratton on her way to the ring for the Money in the Bank Qualifier.

Women’s Money in the Bank Qualifier

The first match of the evening was a Money in the Bank Qualifying Match between Charlotte Flair, Giulia, and United States Champion Zelina Vega. Flair spent the early portion of the match showboating while Giulia and Vega attempted their own. After the break, Charlotte got Vega up on her shoulders, and Giulia came off the top rope with a drop kick as Vega’s head crashed hard on the mat. The three continued with Flair hitting a moonsault off the top onto both competitors for a double near fall. After that, all three competitors traded off finishers, each broken up. Flair got the Figure Eight on Vega, but Giulia jumped off the top with a stomp to Flair’s knee. Giulia then hit the Northern Lights Bomb on Vega for the pinfall victory.

Later backstage, Zelina Vega was nursing her injuries from the match when Chelsea Green and Secret Hervice started talking down to her. A brawl ensued with Michin and B-Fab jumping in to help Vega. Nick Aldis separated the groups, and Michin demanded a match against Niven and Fyre, which Aldis obliged.

DIY is Out for Revenge

DIY cut a backstage promo saying Motor City Machine Guns and Fraxiom have been thorns in their side. Ciampa said something has to change, and it starts tonight when he takes on Chris Sabin one-on-one. This led directly into their match, and it’s been said before, but DIY’s theme must be the worst among the worst of current-day WWE themes. Ciampa dominated the beginning of the match until, after an ad break, Chris Sabin began to mount a comeback, focusing on Ciampa’s knee, which has been a long-standing issue for him. Gargano then distracted Sabin, which led to Shelley getting a big boot for trying to neutralize him. Ciampa then feigned a knee injury, allowing Candice LeRae to come from out of nowhere and pull Sabin’s hair. This, in turn, allowed Ciampa to pull down his knee pad and nail Sabin with the Running Knee Strike for the victory. Candice LeRae then celebrated with DIY. It’s somewhat shocking that it took them this long to do this.

Byron Saxton interviewed Fraxiom backstage, who said it was the biggest night of their lives, and they’re not concerned about what DIY is saying; they’re focused on dethroning the Tag Team Champions in The Street Profits.

They’re Still Going

Damian Priest’s music played, but instead of just Priest emerging, he and Drew McIntyre both appeared, seemingly still brawling since the top of the show. Officials separated them as the crowd chanted Let them fight.

Family Matters

Backstage, Jacob Fatu told JC Mateo that he didn’t know or trust him and didn’t need their help at Backlash. Sikoa said they needed to take that aggression and channel it into their match against Jimmy Uso and Rey Fenix. Sikoa said he wanted Jimmy back in the family, and the only way they can get him to come back is if Jacob and JC work together.

Oh, Sorry

Charlotte Flair ran into Alexa Bliss backstage. She was speaking to Lilly, her doll, and said, “That’s why it’s important to have friends, because when you don’t, there’s no one there to lift you up when it all falls apart.” Bliss then followed that up with “See you at Money in the Bank! Oh, sorry,” and walked off.

B-Fab & Michin, Still Trying

Next up was B-Fab and Michin taking on Piper Niven and Alba Fyre with Chelsea Green. The Secret Hervice dominated the faces early on until Michin got the hot tag and simultaneously took out both of her opponents. Chelsea Green jumped onto the apron to distract, but Zelina Vega appeared and took Green out. Michin hit Eat Defeat, and B-Fab hit the Fab-u-lost Neckbreaker on Alba Fyre for the win. Later, it was announced that Vega would defend her title against Chelsea Green at Saturday Night’s Main Event tomorrow night.

The Pressure’s On YOU

Byron Saxton interviewed The Street Profits and said there’s a belief out there that all the pressure to win tonight was on them since Fraxiom already had one victory over them. Sikoa, Fatu, and Mateo then walked by and stopped the Profits’ promo as they headed to the ring for their match.

Legado del Fantasma is Back at the Dinner Table

After many weeks, Legado del Fantasma was back at the table with wine as Berto rolled his eyes at Santos Escobar’s attempt at a pep talk. Things got serious when Escobar mentioned June 7th at World Collide, when they face the best “they” have to offer. Berto still didn’t comply, but Escobar and Angel toasted. Wade Barrett revealed that Legado would face El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr., Psycho Clown, and Pagano.

Fenix & Jimmy vs. Fatu & Mateo

The next match-up was Rey Fenix teaming with Jimmy Uso against The Family’s Jacob Fatu and JC Mateo. Fenix showed off his high-flying maneuvers as Fatu and Mateo exchanged blind tags, teasing their continued dissent. Later in the match, Rey Fenix received the hot tag and hit a flurry of offense on Fatu, including the Adios Amigo kick, a Hurricanrana, and a Poisonrana for a near fall. Fatu then tossed Fenix over the announce desk as Jimmy Uso went for a splash from the top rope as Solo Sikoa got onto the apron. JC Mateo then hit Tour of the Islands on Uso for the win. Fatu and Mateo side-eyed each other as Sikoa raised their hands.

Later, Nick Aldis approached the Family and revealed that Jacob Fatu would be in a MITB Qualifying Match next week on Smackdown. This made Solo Sikoa (who already qualified) visibly nervous as Fatu told him he loved him and walked off. It was then revealed that Fatu’s opponents would be Carmelo Hayes and Andrade.

Byrton Saxton was back again backstage when LA Knight entered, saying that the odds have been against him since the beginning, and tonight he would overcome the darkness of Aleister Black and Shinsuke Nakamura.

R-Truth Speaks

R-Truth was out next and said he’s not fighting his childhood hero John Cena tomorrow night, and he doesn’t recognize the man who attacked him. Truth said that the more power Cena got, the more disconnected he got, comparing him to “Goblin” from The Lord of the Rings. Truth continued, saying he would beat the hustle, loyalty, and respect back into Cena, finishing “If Cena wins, we riot!”.

Naomi & Jade & Nia Package

A pre-produced promo video featuring Naomi, Jade Cargill, and Nia Jax was shown. All three said they would go on to win Money in the Bank and the WWE Championship. It was revealed that this would be one of the Money in the Bank qualifiers next week.

Men’s Money in the Bank Qualifier

Next up was LA Knight, Aleister Black, and Shinsuke Nakamura going at it with a spot in Money in the Bank on the line. All three competitors rallied back and forth in the early going, echoing similar spots to the Women’s Triple Threat earlier. Aleister Black then gained control, but then did a moonsault where Knight and Nakamura failed to fully catch him. They followed that up with Black doing a dive over the top rope to the floor, where Knight didn’t fully catch him again, resulting in back-to-back painful-looking spots for Black. The finish saw Nakamura going for the Kinshasha, but Black nailed him with the Black Mass instead. Before Black could cover, LA Knight dumped Black to the outside and took the pinfall for himself.

I Chose You

Bacsktage, Miz and Carmelo Hayes languished in Aleister Black’s loss. Miz revealed that Nick Aldis gave him the option of either himself or Hayes getting a Money in the Bank qualifying shot next week, and he chose Hayes. Miz said he believed in his ability and would make sure he walked out of Money in the Bank with the briefcase, as long as Hayes executed the play exactly as he designed it.

Bianca Will Get Through It

A promo package aired with Bianca Belair talking about how the last year has been the toughest of her life. She reveals she considered giving up but decided she would get through it, noting her broken finger. She said that her best is yet to come. Then it was revealed that Belair would return next week (despite the video indicating it would still be some time).

WWE Tag Team Championship

The main event of the evening was The Street Profits defending the WWE Tag Team Championships against Fraxiom. Street Profits started off dominating the smaller-sized team until Fraxiom started up with their high-flying moves, including four straight dives (which Joe Tessitore called “The Dive Train” – please don’t let this be a thing) to the outside onto the Profits.

After the break, Fraxiom’s momentum cointiineud with Nathan Frazer dominating Montez Ford. The Profits then started showing signs of heel-ish work after getting frustrated with being unable to put Fraxiom down. Fraxiom then suddenly got both Profits into choke holds until Dawkins suplexed Frazer onto Axiom. The Profits hit the Blockbuster Electric Chair, but Frazer jumped off the top rope to just barely break up the pinfall attempt. Axiom then hit Dawkins with the Spanish Fly, followed by the Phoenix Splash from Frazer. Montez Ford barely broke the pin up and took an enzuigiri a millisecond after breaking up the pin. DIY and then appeared, looking to interfere when Motor City Machine Guns followed, brawling with them.

Montez Ford was setting up for From the Heavens when the lights went off. When they came back on, the Wyatt Sicks were in the center of the ring. The Wyatts attacked everyone, causing the disqualification. Mayhem ensued until the Sicks were left standing in the ring, and Uncle Howdy produced a cake to which he blew out the single candle on it, ending the show.
