Ben Askren still on a ventilator, may require a lung transplant

Ben Askren continues to fight for his life, with his wife providing an update on the ex-fighter.

Askren was hospitalized earlier this month due to severe pneumonia, among several issues he is dealing with. He was recently transported from hospital care in Nevada to his home state of Wisconsin.

Amy Askren posted an update on Tuesday, her husband is still on a ventilator and ECMO.

There are good days and bad, but on the good, they have been able to wean his sedation enough for him to open his eyes and squeeze hands. His body can’t handle coming off sedation too much yet. I’m still praying for a miracle with his current lungs, but they are currently starting the evaluation process for lung transplant.

Askren was a two-time NCAA Division I champion at the University of Missouri and represented the U.S. at the Summer Olympics in 2008 before his MMA career.

The UFC aired a video for Askren this past Saturday during its Fight Night event in Atlanta and wished him a full recovery.
