Jaida Parker makes quick work of Fatal Influence’s Jazmyn Nyx

This week’s episode of NXT from the Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, started with a ten-bell salute for Hulk Hogan, just like WWE did on Raw and Smackdown over the past week.

After a video package on Hogan played, we got a recap of the highlights from last week’s episode. Among the top moments: Blake Monroe laid out Jordynne Grace, Oba Femi defended his title in a triple threat match, and Santino Marella challenged Ethan Page to a North American Championship match for this week.

The opening match of the night saw Jaida Parker take on Fatal Influence member Jazmyn Nyx. Before getting onstage, Jacy Jayne was seen telling Nyx that tonight is her chance to prove that she’s a “baddie.”

Nyx got the first near fall in this back-and-forth match, dropping Parker with a Pele Kick. Parker responded by throwing Nyx off the ropes for a spinning back elbow, then a back bodydrop. The fight went to the corner, where Parker set Nyx up for her High-Step. Parker continued her successful run with a Hipnotic, putting away Nyx via pinfall. Fallon Henley and Jayne looked frustrated at Nyx as the segment came to a close.

Both eyeing NXT title shot, Je’Von Evans and Trick Williams butt heads

Je’Von Evans came to the ring for the next segment. He reflected on his chat with The Undertaker last week, where the legend told him to go after the “biggest dog” in NXT. As Evans was talking about how he planned to follow Taker’s advice, TNA World Champion Trick Williams interrupted.

Williams, describing himself as the biggest dog, mentioned that he had already beaten Evans in a title match before. Evans reminded Williams that he got chokeslammed by The Undertaker last week. Williams said that doesn’t matter because he’s still the biggest thing in NXT and TNA.

“I wasn’t even talking about your ass, gang,” Evans said, before mentioning that he considered the “biggest dog” to be NXT Champion Oba Femi. Williams didn’t like that comment, saying that Femi wants to be Williams. Williams then mentioned that, like Jacy Jayne, he plans to become a double champ soon.

Evans said he wouldn’t mind taking Williams out of the equation to get an NXT title. The High Ryze came out to take Williams’ side. Wes Lee said Evans doesn’t understand what it takes to be champ.

Evans said he wanted to start his road toward a title tonight and begin by going after Lee. Evans tried to attack the four of them, but that predictably didn’t go his way. The rest of High Ryze held down Evans as Lee landed a Cardiac Kick. After taking out Evans, Lee got on the mic to say that he’ll talk to Ava about a match between them later on the episode.

Tavion Heights officially departs the NQCC

Chase U’s Kale Dixon and Uriah Connors were also seen following The Undertaker’s advice about taking out the “biggest dogs,” planning on attacking NXT Tag Team Champions Hank and Tank.

Once they stormed Hank and Tank with steel chairs, the champs insisted that they were willing to give them a title shot without any sort of backstage attack needed. Andre Chase, who walked into the locker room, said that when he said they should follow the advice of going after big names, he didn’t mean attack them with chairs. Anyway, that match is booked for next week.

The next match of the night saw Tavion Heights once again attempt to fight his way out of the No Quarter Catch Crew, facing Charlie Dempsey in singles action. They faced off earlier this month, with Heights losing via submission. A rematch with the same “if Heights wins, he gets to leave” stipulation was booked last week by Bully Ray.

A clip of Joe Hendry’s entrance video played for half a second during this match. He was shown two more times later in the show, too. They’re clearly teasing something. Heights and Dempsey both scored crossbodies at the same time, taking them both down as the match went to a break.

Heights was gaining some steam as the broadcast returned, sending Dempsey out of the ring after scoring a dropkick and then a swingblade. Heights tried charging at Dempsey while the fight was ringside, but Dempsey dodged an attack, sending him into the steel stairs.

Back in the ring, Dempsey continued going after the left leg of Heights, which had crashed into the stairs moments prior. Wren Sinclair, who previously threw in a towel to force an end in the first Heights vs. Dempsey bout, looked stressed at ringside as Heights tried to battle out of a Half Crab.

Heights took out Dempsey with a huge clothesline as the fight went back to the feet. He scored an impressive Death Valley Driver, but had his momentum stopped after due to Dempsey kicking at his injured knee.

Heights reversed a move from Dempsey into a belly-to-belly suplex, giving him the pinfall win, confirming his exit from the No Quarter Catch Crew. Dempsey and Heights shook hands as the commentary questioned what is next for the NQCC.

Backstage, Wes Lee told Trick Williams he wants High Ryze to get a TNA Tag Team Championships shot after he handles Je’Von Evans later in the evening. While Williams liked the idea, TNA General Manager Santino Marella entered the shot and said Williams doesn’t have any stroke in the company with those types of decisions. Marella explained that he’s there to get the North American title, then said he believes Williams will lose his title soon.

Blake Monroe et al. pitch case for future title shot

Blake Monroe came to the ring to address Jordynne Grace in the next segment. Commentary noted earlier in the show that Grace isn’t in the building since she wasn’t medically cleared to appear.

Monroe said Grace “isn’t good enough,” hence why she doesn’t associate with her anymore. “She’s more of a background player. Or as some might say, an extra,” Monroe said, before showing an old WWE screenshot that showed Grace in the background.

Monroe showed an old photo shoot of Grace and said that an NXT champ can’t look “like this.” She continued body shaming her, saying that Grace isn’t “championship material,” but instead “gym membership material.”

The promo was eventually interrupted by Lola Vice. “I don’t understand how you can be so beautiful but so ugly inside, man,” Vice replied. Vice said that she represents star power by creating viral moments and representing the promotion around the world, hence why she should become a champ soon.

Jaida Parker, who won just earlier in the program, was the next to say that she’s chasing the NXT Women’s Championship.

Grace’s music hit, which terrified Monroe, who wasn’t expecting to see her. False alarm: Kelani Jordan came out and said she might be the wrong Jordan that Monroe was looking for.

After some more talking, Monroe delivered a headbutt to Jordan, kicking off a brawl between the four women in the ring. It was Vice and Jordan who sent Parker and Monroe retreating to end the segment.

Backstage, Tatum Paxley told Izzi Dame that she wants a title shot against Sol Ruca after The Culling won their eight-person tag match last week. Dame said that Paxley was getting ahead of herself by asking for such an opportunity. It was just moments later that Shawn Spears came into the frame and said that they were able to get Paxley a shot against Ruca for her Women’s North American Championship next week.

Paxley left as she talked about how much she loves her “new family.” While The Culling walked away, Luca Crusifino entered the shot and said, “No family lasts forever.”

An unexpected cameo causes Lash Legend to lose

The second Fatal Influence challenge of the night saw Fallon Henley attempt to overcome Lash Legend in singles action. Would she prevail, or like Jazmyn Nyx, come up short?

Legend was controlling early in this match against Henley, getting a near fall after a standing frogsplash. She caught Henley as she attempted a crossbody, instead bouncing her head between the middle and top rope before scoring a backbreaker.

Henley avoided a splash in the corner from Legend, then came out of the corner with a Blockbuster, getting her back into the bout. Henley scored a bulldog and then a hurrcanrana to Legend.

Legend avoided a move from Henley, then dropped the Fatal Influence wrestler with a pair of forearms. The ex-Meta Four talent scored a fallaway slam, then sent Henley tumbling to the outside with a forearm.

Legend took out NXT and TNA champ Jacy Jayne with a front kick while at ringside. Surprisingly, as the referee was looking away, Nia Jax appeared from the crowd to attack Legend. This shocked the live crowd, who started chanting “Holy s***.” Jax tossed Legend back into the ring, where Henley scored a Famouser for the pinfall win.

Jax continued to attack Legend after the match, connecting with her Annihilator finisher in the corner.

Backstage, Yoshiki Inamura and Josh Briggs had to be pulled apart. Channing Lorenzo attempted to talk to Inamura about how family doesn’t exist in this industry. Inamura wasn’t buying his pitch, knocking down Lorenzo with a slap. Inamura said he will show Lorenzo honor on next week’s NXT.

Je’Von Evans takes down Wes Lee to kick off quest toward NXT title

In a matchup confirmed earlier on the show, Je’Von Evans took on Wes Lee. Trick Williams was on commentary during this bout.

An irate Evans wasn’t going to wait for Lee to hit the ring to begin their fight, diving to the outside with a suicide dive before the match officially started. Evans came off the top with a crossbody, giving him a near fall just seconds into the bout.

Lee got Evans down with a combination of strikes, ending with a dropkick to the back of the head. He tried to follow up with a standing moonsault, but Evans dodged the move. The two traded shots on the feet, an exchange that Lee got the best of, controlling the match briefly afterward.

Evans got some momentum back after avoiding a clothesline from Lee, instead dropping him with a head kick. Evans got distracted while climbing the ropes, getting told by the rest of High Ryze that he shouldn’t go to the top. This allowed Lee to throw Evans over the top and to the outside, then do a dive just before the show went to a break.

The broadcast highlighted that Lee landed a Twisting Senton during the commercial break. Evans scored a massive slap to the chest as the show returned, beginning a combo of comeback moves. Evans scored a head kick, a snap German Suplex, another huge slap, then a Superman Punch.

Evans came bouncing off the ropes with a head kick for a near fall. Lee was thrown into a corner of the ring, where he was able to wobble Evans with a head kick. Lee started to make a comeback of his own, hitting a hurricanrana then a brutal brainbuster, but it wasn’t enough to put away Evans.

Lee climbed to the top rope, but was knocked off balance by Evans, causing him to hang upside down from the corner. Evans went to the other side of the ring, then, in an impressive athletic feat, scored a Coast to Coast, flipping upside down in the process. Evans followed that up with a huge frogsplash, which surprisingly wasn’t enough to keep Lee down for a three-count.

Evans tried for a dive to the outside onto Lee, but instead landed on Tyson Dupont and Tyriek Igwe. Lee caught Evans with a roll-up attempt as they went back into the ring, but Evans kicked out.

Lee tried to end the match with a Cardiac Kick, but Evans’ legs hit the middle rope during a pin, breaking the attempt. Lee escaped a roll-up from Evans. As they got back up to their feet, Evans hit a cutter. Evans came off the top with a super cutter, giving him the pinfall win. An exciting win for Evans, who continues to put together surprising moments on a consistent basis.

After the match, Oba Femi was shown hoisting his NXT Championship as he looked down at both Evans and Williams.

In a pre-taped interview, Myles Borne put forward an inspiring promo about the odds he had to overcome in life. He mentioned how he blocks out voices like Lexis King, who only bring negative energy.

Backstage, Lexis King came to Ava to complain about the sit-down interview Borne had, arguing that he isn’t actually deaf. “If Myles was deaf, how could he wrestle?” King said. Ava said that she has booked a match between King and Borne for next week.

The broadcast provided a quick rundown of next week’s lineup:

  • Blake Monroe vs. Kelani Jordan
  • Sol Ruca vs. Tatum Paxley (NXT Women’s North American Championship)
  • Hank and Tank vs. Kale Dixon and Uriah Connors (NXT Tag Team Championships)

Nia Jax interrupted a backstage interview with Fallon Henley, telling Lash Legend that she just “doesn’t measure up.”

Ethan Page narrowly avoids The Cobra, beats the returning Santino Marella in North American title bout

The main event of the night saw Santino Marella work his first one-on-one match on WWE TV since 2014, challenging NXT Women’s North American Champion Ethan Page.

Marella wrestled Page to the mat with some pin attempts in the opening minute of the bout, but wasn’t able to find a three-count from any of the moves. Marella’s relentless wrestling caused Page to roll to the outside for a breather.

Marella’s success in the ring was slowed after he was floored by a big boot to the head from Page. The defending champ got a two-count from a neckbreaker attempt. Marella avoided a splash in the corner from Page, then picked up the champ and spun him around numerous times before scoring a slam. This move made Marella dizzy, and thus made him also fall to the mat.

A series of reversals ended with a stunner from Marella. The challenger got a near fall after coming charging out of the ropes with a standing frogsplash. Back up to the feet, Page dropped Marella with a head kick. Page came off the top with a spash, but Marella countered the move by putting up his knees.

Marella ended a series of strikes with a hip toss. He followed Page to the outside, coming over the top rope with a dive. Back into the ring, Marella set up for the Cobra. Page avoided the Cobra by pulling the referee between them. As the referee was looking away, Page poked an eye of Marella. This dirty tactic allowed Page to connect with a cutter, giving him the pin to defend his NXT North American Championship for the third time.

Before the show came to an end, a clip of Tony D’Angelo dining inside a restaurant aired. He told the waiter that he no longer needed to be called “The Don.” “Tony D is just fine,” he said. A figure approached him as the show went off air.
