AEW’s Tony Khan says the promotion has already manufactured Women’s World Tag Team Championships, and is now just waiting for the right time to introduce the belts to the promotion.

In recent months, Khan has not shied away from the fact that he hopes to introduce a tag team division for women’s talents. But the belts have yet to be formally introduced, causing wonder about when these titles will finally be utilized.

In an interview with Iridian Fierro, Khan said that he wants to launch the titles soon with a tournament, but is waiting until there are fewer injuries on the women’s roster before adding another title to the mix.

“I have a bunch of people I would like to get involved in a women’s tag team tournament, potentially,” Khan said. “There has been so many injuries in the women’s division. As the person who put together the women’s casino gauntlet, I wish that we had come out of it healthier. A quarter of the people in the match got knocked out of the match and out of action indefinitely. So we had one match where I lost 25 percent of the roster in one match. So that was pretty hard … I would like to do AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championship. To have that, I really think we do need to have a healthy division that can maintain these championships, because we haven’t been able to sustain that.”

Among those injured, Khan mentioned, was Mina Shirakawa, who hasn’t wrestled since she appeared in the aforementioned Casino Gauntlet match at All In: Texas.

While their rollout has been delayed, Khan confirmed in the interview that it’s less about “if” and more about “when” for the new tag titles.

“I have the belts,” he said. “I made the belts. They exist. But I will put them into play when we are able to put the very best, full roster forward.”
