The big Title vs. Mask match between MJF and Místico is now official for CMLL’s 91st Aniversario card next month.
MJF returned to Arena Mexico on Friday to defend his CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship against Zandokan Jr. Once again, MJF was accompanied by his interpreter, Jon Cruz, who dressed as Abraham Lincoln, and the two played a great tandem as they railed on the Mexican audience.
MJF praised the U.S. and told Zandokan Jr. to “walk the plank”, allowing the Rudo to cut an uncharacteristic, spirited babyface promo for the audience and establishing his role for the match.
The match had great heat with MJF constantly playing to the crowd and Cruz getting involved. The major spot saw Zandokan Jr. drape MJF on the barricade and followed with a tope suicida while MJF was balanced on the structure.
MJF had been working on his arm after snapping it on the rope to weaken it for his submission. After shoving Zandokan Jr. into the referee, he scored with a low blow and applied Salt of the Earth for the submission after thirteen minutes and ten seconds.
The major angle occurred after MJF addressed the crowd, referring to Místico as a “bitch” for not coming out. When he finally did, MJF and Cruz fled the ring to the entrance area.
Místico issued a challenge for the World Light Heavyweight title on September 19, but MJF turned down the offer unless Místico placed his mask on the line, and the match was agreed to. MJF made it clear, mentioning he is not putting his hair on the line.
MJF entered the ring to shake his hand, which Místico accepted, but it was a ploy as the champion struck Místico with his belt. MJF proceeded to remove the mask of Místico and wear it as he delivered a Tombstone and then placed an American flag over the fallen Místico.
His closing address to the audience was, “F—k Mexico, F—k Místico, F—k all of you”.
The angle received tremendous heat, and the long build-up will climax next month, and it feels like a major match.
