Toni Storm’s fourth reign as AEW Women’s World Champion is still going strong.
Storm submitted ROH Women’s World Champion Athena on Sunday night, keeping her run as the top AEW women’s talent alive. Her win took place as part of Forbidden Door at The O2 in London, England.
Storm was able to counter an O-Face finisher from Athena into a TCM Chickenwing, forcing a tap 15 minutes into the competitive title bout.
Billie Starkz played a significant role in helping Athena stay in the fight early, providing distractions that the challenger was quick to capitalize upon. But the ringside advantage for Athena would disappear after Mina Shirakawa ran in for the save during the bout’s closing minutes, chasing Starkz to the backstage area.
Athena, who has held the ROH Women’s World Championship for nearly 1,000 days, earned a shot at Storm by winning the Women’s Casino Gauntlet match at All In: Texas last month. A win on Sunday would’ve started her first-ever reign with an AEW title.
Storm has held the AEW Women’s World Championship since February, when she regained the belt in a 15-minute battle against Mariah May. She has defended the belt five times, also beating Mina Shirakawa, Megan Bayne and Mercedes Moné on recent pay-per-view broadcasts.
