Due to the European tour, Corey Graves isn’t part of the broadcast, and it’s Vic Joseph and Booker T. on commentary.

Ricky Saints started the show and put over Je’Von Evans, but acknowledged Oba Femi still holding onto the NXT Championship. He listed off his accomplishments since arriving at NXT, but Femi’s title eludes him, and he deserves the next shot while calling out Femi.

Instead, Josh Briggs interrupts and is done with outsiders like Yoshiki Inamura and Saints getting shot; they don’t deserve it. Saints compared Briggs to “Sid from Toy Story” and won’t go to the back of the line, and are about to fight when Ava stops them.

Ava said no one has heard from Je’Von Evans since Heatwave and needs to find a number one contender. So, she makes a match between Saints and Briggs to determine who receives the next title shot at No Mercy on September 27.

Blake Monroe vs. Kelani Jordan

Monroe stopped a handspring off the ropes with The Stroke on Jordan. Monroe bridged to a Fujiwara armbar, but Jordan countered out. Jordan fought back and hit a DDT when Monroe rolled to the floor.

Jordynne Grace came out and chased Monroe on the floor and back into the ring. Jordan hit a version of an Angle Slam and a split-legged moonsault to win.

WINNER: Kelani Jordan in 4:16

Jordan lost in the #1 contender’s match while Monroe beat Grace, but it appears the latter program is ongoing. Monroe told Grace that “it’s over,” and this led to the ending by Jordan. It sort of extinguished Monroe’s win against Grace at Heatwave, as it appears they’re just running it back.

Vic Joseph had a sit-down chat with Myles Borne about his feud with Lexis King and bullying him over his partial deafness. It was an excuse to re-air last week’s angle involving King using Mace on Borne.

Myles Borne vs. Lexis King in a Blindfold Match

Borne was interviewed and asked the fans to lead him in the match and play off their energy. This was a babyface promo out of 1984.

It was full of comedic spots, but Borne landed a dropkick for a big pop. King fired off a punch in the corner when Borne had moved and executed a flip through the ropes and landed hard on the floor.

King chopped the ring post and tripped over the ring steps. King missed an elbow drop onto the canvas and almost superkicked referee Adrian Butler. Later, King poked Butler in the eyes, removed his blindfold, and kicked Borne low before winning the match after using The Coronation.

WINNER: Lexis King in 4:52

This was all comedy, but I’ll say, Lexis King understood the assignment and was very entertaining. Usually in these matches, the audience is extra loud as they direct the babyface toward the heel, and this crowd didn’t supply that level of energy, so it was left to King and Borne to replicate a glitch-filled WWE 2K reel.

Wren Sinclair is panicking about her tag match with The Culling and hasn’t found a partner. Charlie Dempsey recruited Kendal Grey for the spot, and Sinclair is relieved.

Wren Sinclair & Kendal Grey vs. Tatum Paxley & Izzi Dame

Paxley grabbed Sinclair from the apron and allowed The Culling to get the advantage.

Grey was tagged and hit a great-looking belly-to-belly on Paxley. Paxley attempted to drive Sinclair’s face into her knee and missed by a mile. Dame tagged herself in, Paxley was surprised, and Dame nearly got pinned by a crucifix when Paxley saved.

All four entered, Grey put Paxley into an armbar, and Dame ignored her partner and instead, hit Sinclair with a big boot and sit-out powerbomb to win.

WINNER: Izzi Dame & Tatum Paxley in 3:47

The idea is that The Culling has been gaslighting Paxley that they won’t abandon her, and Dame used her during the match and didn’t help her when she was in a submission. It was too short to have a great read on any of them, but it does seem they are placing Grey into a story with Dempsey, and she has a lot of potential.

Ricky Saints vs. Josh Briggs in a #1 Contender’s Match

No entrances for either.

Saints dropkicked the steps into Briggs’ knees and shoved Briggs into the post, but they bumped heads and went to a commercial break.

Briggs hit a mid-ring crossbody, took over as the audience chanted for Saints. After landing forearms, he finally took Briggs off his feet and hit a Michinoku Driver for a two-count.

Briggs spun Saints into a back breaker and followed with a big boot.

Saints stopped a choke slam, hit Briggs with a spear, but missed an elbow off the top. Briggs hit the choke slam, and Saints kicked out.

Saints came off the ropes and rotated into a Shiranui and won with a Tornado DDT to become the next contender.

WINNER: Ricky Saints in 9:12

Lola Vice is putting on her makeup when Zaria asks, “Is that Maybelline?” (Somewhere, Mark Shapiro was just granted his wings)

Sol Rica made Vice a special shirt for their match tonight. Jaida Parker entered and congratulated Vice for winning at Heatwave.

Lash Legend confronted Parker, who walked away and gagged, seeing Stacks Lorenzo and Arianna Grace flirting.

Back from break, Oba Femi is in the ring with Ricky Saints.

Saints said Femi barely escaped Heatwave with the title, he cannot rule forever, and it ends at No Mercy. Femi sees fear in the eyes of Saints and will prove he is not special and will become ordinary against Femi and “make the absolute, absolutely mediocre”.

They are interrupted by DarkState arriving through the crowd and threatening Femi and Saints. It’s a 4-on-2 fight until Hank & Tank run down. DarkState is sent out of the ring as the four babyfaces claim the ring.

Ava repeated that the Speed titles are coming to NXT, and a tournament begins next Tuesday for a shot at Sol Ruca’s title. The tournament will feature Candice LeRae, Lainey Reid, Faby Apache, and Xia Brookside. It begins next week with LeRae versus Brookside.

Alba Fyre vs. Tyra Mae Steele

The Secret Hervice, Ethan Page, and Tavion Heights were at ringside. Green was wearing a Toronto Raptors’ top.

This was a much more subdued crowd than the one in Lowell on Sunday. Steele took Fyre down and trapped her legs, and applied a bow & arrow.

Steele was sent to the floor, and while distracted by Green & Page, Fyre landed a dive and took control inside the ring.

Steele missed a splash off the top, and Fyre landed a DDT for a two-count. Steele stopped a KLR Driver and applied the ankle lock, and Page reached to assist and was kicked away by Steele, who proceeded to roll up Fyre.

WINNER: Tyra Mae Steele in 4:22

Green attacked Steele and tossed her out of the ring. She attempted to slap Heights, who grabbed her arm and was jumped by Ethan Page with the North American title and hit Twisted Grin.

Page placed the Canadian flag on top of Heights, to a fraction of the heat MJF received with Mistico.

Hank & Tank asked Ava for a rematch with DarkState and a tag title rematch. Ava said the champions want the same thing, but they want an eight-man tag involving Oba Femi and Ricky Saints next week. After that, they can discuss a title rematch, and they agree to do so.

Sarah Schreiber interviewed Fatal Influence, and Jacy Jayne said the Knockouts title was stolen from her. Jazmyn Nyx wants to bring the Speed title to their group.

Jayne shoots her down and says if anyone is getting that title, it’s Fallon Henley, and Nyx argues with them.

NEXT WEEK:
*WWE Speed Tournament: Candice LeRae vs. Xia Brookside
*Jaida Parker vs. Lash Legend
*Oba Femi, Ricky Saints, Hank & Tank vs. DarkState

*Women’s Speed Championship: Sol Ruca © vs. TBA

Sol Ruca, Zaria & Lola Vice vs. Fatal Influence

Vic mentioned it’s Sol Ruca’s birthday (she’s 26), and Booker was offended when asked if he got her anything, “I’m not her boyfriend”.

Zaria lifted Nyx on the turnbuckle in a rear-naked choke like Brody King. Zaria delivered a scoop slam to Vice on top of Nyx and retreated to her corner to tag Jayne.

Ruca and Vice double-teamed Henley, and Ruca started a “wave” with the crowd. Jayne held down the rope as Ruca crashed to the floor. Lainey Reid was shown watching from the perch as they went to a break.

Fatal Influence had the advantage over Ruca. Nyx used a Perfect Plex (Fisherman suplex) and moved into a Muta Lock. Ruca crawled to her corner, but Jayne yanked Vice off the apron and into the steps to prevent a tag.

Zaria is tagged, catches Nyx off the middle rope into a back suplex, and tags Ruca for a Keg Stand, but Henley saves.

All six were down, Ruca tagged Vice and attacked all three with big strikes, including rapid-fire kicks on Jayne and Nyx, followed by hip attacks. Booker is trying to recreate the same type of reaction for the hip attack as he did with the Devil’s Kiss.

Zaria speared Jayne on the floor, Ruca shoved Hemley into Nyx and hit the Sol Snatcher, and Vice used the spinning back fist to pin Henley.

WINNERS: Sol Ruca, Zaria & Lola Vice in 14:15

Final Thoughts:

There were four women’s matches on the show, which were linked to all the major stories on the show except for setting up Ricky Saints as the NXT title challenger at No Mercy. While their performances were not anything extraordinary, Kendal Grey and Tyra Mae Steele were the most emphasized on the show, and while Steele seems like a big focus, Grey has a lot of potential and could be another one to watch in the division.

I wouldn’t say any of the wrestling matches were “must-see”, but the main event six-woman tag had the crowd engaged and had a strong finishing sequence from Zaria’s spear, the Sol Snatcher, and Vice getting the pin as she goes for the women’s championship on September 27.

NXT feels like it’s getting its ducks in a row early, so that No Mercy can have multiple episodes to promote the top matches and establish the men’s and women’s championship matches four weeks in advance.

It was an okay show with some good segments leading to matches at No Mercy, with the two matches of note being the main event and Saints vs. Briggs.
