Florida-based independent wrestler Jaka has passed away at 39.
The former EVOLVE Tag Champion, real name Jonathan Echevarria, had been in intensive care in a critical condition after suffering a heart attack.
The sad news came just three days after his sister set up a GoFundMe campaign to help with medical bills. At that time, she stated, in part:
It is with a heavy heart that I’m creating this GoFundMe on behalf of my brother, Jonathan “Jaka/Tyson/Tio” Echevarria. He is currently in the ICU after suffering a heart attack and remains in critical condition.
His passing was first announced by Beyond Wrestling in a social media post, stating, “The original Ace. RIP Jaka”
Gabe Sapolsky, booker of Evolve while Jaka was wrestling for the promotion, commented, “A true tragedy. No one will say a bad word about the man. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Thank you for everything, Jaka”.
C*4 Wrestling, based in Ottawa, Ontario, also paid tribute, stating, “Very saddened to hear the news about Jaka’s passing. I always loved having him on shows. He was a welcome addition to our locker room. He was kind, hardworking, and thoughtful. To his friends and family, we send our love and support. Rest in peace.”
Jaka debuted in 2007 and wrestled for many promotions, including Beyond Wrestling, Chikara, CZW, and GCW. During his EVOLVE run, he shared the Tag Team Championship twice with Chris Dickinson.
