HHH, Michaels & Regal get things started at Full Sail

A special “Homecoming” edition of NXT, which took place at the show’s old home base, Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida, opened with a video package detailing the deep history the venue has with the developmental brand.

To say the few years that NXT spent full-time at the university created some memories would be an understatement, as illustrated quite well by the video they played. We also got an NXT intro using the old CFO$ “Roar of the Crowd” theme, which was a fun nostalgia flashback.

We finally cut to the live feed, where Paul Levesque made his way to the ring. Levesque, who spent many years closely involved with NXT, talked about the significance of the building.

Levesque credited fans for helping make NXT what it is today, thanking them. Joining in shortly after was Shawn Michaels, who currently carries the official title of Senior Vice President of Talent Development (code for: He works on NXT).

Levesque and Michaels were meant to represent the past & present of NXT in this segment. Michaels said that his NXT roster is ready to “steer this ship into the future.” Levesque posed a question to Michaels: “What if I said I wanted to come back?”

Michaels pushed back on this, telling Levesque that he would have a “very big problem.” Interrupting them was William Regal, who of course, was an on-screen General Manager for NXT. Regal said he knew only one way to solve this: “War games!”

Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss, who are set to defend their tag titles tonight, appeared on stage with Regal. Flair mentioned that no matter who has overseen or managed NXT over the years, it has always been the women of the brand who have run the show. Flair shouted out Paige, Asuka, Carmella, Bliss, and the Four Horsewomen.

Bliss added: Nia Jax, Ember Moon, Rhea Ripley, IYO SKY.

The segment came to an end with the tag title match promoted for the next block. A fun little ode to some notable past NXT figures to kick things off.

Bliss & Flair turn back The Culling in tag title bout

The first match of the night saw WWE Tag Team Champions Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss take on The Culling’s Tatum Paxley and Izzi Dame. This was a title shot Dame and Paxley earned earlier this month after winning a three-way #1 contenders match, beating Fatal Influence and ZaRuca.

The defending champs had a hot start to the match, sending The Culling retreating to ringside as we went to a commercial break. Flair found herself taking on both Culling members in the ring as the show returned, trying to fight them both off with chops. The numbers disadvantage became too much for Flair to manage, causing her to eat a Codebreaker from Dame for a two-count.

Flair and Dame both dropped eachother with front kicks. This allowed for hot tags to both Paxley and Bliss, who had a brief back-and-forth in the opening minutes of the match as well. Bliss had the upper hand in the exchange between them. Bliss went for a Twisted Bliss off the top, but numerous distractions from The Culling delayed her move. Upon eventually attempting the move, Paxley put up her knees to counter it.

Paxley went for the pin after blocking the move, but only got two. Paxley tried for a 450 Splash, but Bliss avoided it. Back up to her feet, Bliss reversed a move into a Sister Abgail for the pinfall victory in 11 minutes. Bliss and Flair’s reign won’t come to an end at Full Sail.

In a backstage segment, Lainey Reid and Candice LeRae both told Sol Ruca that they’ll beat her for the Speed Women’s Championship at No Mercy (we’ll find out which of them will actually face her on next week’s episode as part of the Speed #1 contenders tournament final). Then, in a surprise appearance, Shayna Baszler appeared. Baszler tried to give Ruca and Zaria some advice, considering the amount of time they spend fighting with eachother: “Apologize, fix it, and you’ll get everything you want.”

The Miz helps Hayes, Williams score tag win

The second match of the night saw TNA World Champion Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes reunite, facing off against the Smackdown tag duo of Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano, #DIY. Both Gargano and Ciampa walked out to their old themes, causing a big reaction from the crowd.

Gargano went flying just a minute into the match, delivering a tope suicida to the outside onto both Hayes and Williams. This was a hard one to hit, as the ringside area was quite limited for this show (even smaller than the old Full Sail days, since the commentary table wasn’t usually at ringside!).

Williams got control of the bout during the break, isolating Ciampa in the ring. Ciampa found an opening for a tag just as the show returned, catching Williams with a neckbreaker. Gargano had a fun sequence with Williams. They battled on the ramp with reversals before returning to the ring, where Gargano dove through the ropes for a spear.

Williams had success after getting back into the ring, taking on both Ciampa and Gargano at the same time. He started to set up for the TrickShot against Ciampa but was stopped due to Hayes tagging himself into the match. This annoyed Williams and he teased taking out Hayes with a move, but Hayes ducked once he seemingly targeted him with a clothesline, causing him to instead take out Gargano.

#DIY were closing in on a win and had their eyes on two-on-one attacks against Williams. Hayes pushed Williams out of the way and challenged #DIY for an exchange against him instead. He ran into a Shatter Machine and ate a Meet in the Middle, but a pin attempt was stopped by Williams.

Williams tossed Gargano out of the ring. Appearing from the crowd as the referee wasn’t looking was The Miz, Hayes’ Smackdown tag partner, who delivered a Skull Crushing Finale onto Gargano. He then rolled Gargano back into the ring, giving Hayes the opportunity to land Nothing But Net for the pinfall win in 10 minutes. This was a really fun, fast-paced match and really highlighted why #DIY is so exciting in a tag setting.

It was mentioned by commentary numerous times during the show that TNA Wrestlers have been issuing warnings to the NXT roster on social media.

Ethan Page retains against returning NXT star

Backstage, WWE United States Champion Sami Zayn was asked who he sees potential in on the current NXT roster. Zayn said he sees a lot of himself in Je’Von Evans. Josh Briggs approached Zayn to try and explain why he hates Evans.

Evans flew into the frame to attack Briggs, a brawl which was quickly broken apart. After security got between them, Zayn pulled Evans aside – like Baszler did earlier with ZaRuca, he wanted to give advice. “You have a big future in front of you, man,” Zayn told him. “And for guys like you, guys like us, it’s not going to come easy, I’m telling you that right now. But for guys like us, the sky’s the limit.”

The second title match of the night was up next, as NXT North American Champion Ethan Page took on NXT legend Tyler Breeze. Page was looking to bounce back following a loss on Friday, failing to capture the AAA Latin American Championship at Worlds Collide. Speaking of AAA, the Latin American Champ himself, El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr., was at ringside for this match.

Commentary mentioned a fun part of Breeze’s career, that being the time he faced Jushin Thunder Liger at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn in 2015, which was over a decade ago – wow, I’m feeling old.

Page spent nearly all of the match’s first five minutes in control. It was only after the show returned from a break that Breeze found his first notable opening, escaping a move from Page to drop the champ with a head kick. Breeze came running off the ropes with a forearm, then rolled a hurricanrana into a roll-up pin, giving him a two-count.

Page scored the “Confidence Breaker” and then a Razor’s Edge (“Ego’s Edge”), but it wasn’t enough to put away Breeze.

The fight went over to the ringpost, where Breeze briefly locked Page into a Figure Four. Back in the ring, he used a body scissors for a snazzy single-leg crab setup, a submission Page eventually escaped with a pin attempt.

Breeze got a very close near-fall after scoring a superkick. After a series of quick reversals, Breeze got another close two-count from a spinning heel kick. A loud Full Sail crowd chanted: “That was three.”

Breeze climbed to the top rope but was tripped up by Page, who scored a draping Twisted Grin cutter for the clean pinfall win in 10 minutes. Finish kind of sucked the atmosphere out of the crowd, but this was nonetheless another solid match. Page faced off with Wagner Jr. after his win.

Backstage, Damian Priest told Tavion Heights that he sees a lot in him. In fact, he sees so much in him that he pulled a favor: Heights will face Ethan Page for the North American Championship at No Mercy.

Title vs. title match proposed for next week’s NXT

Grayson Waller hosted a special Homecoming edition of “The Grayson Waller Effect,” featuring NXT Champion Oba Femi and upcoming title challenger, Ricky Saints. They wasted no time getting this going, with all three wrestlers already in the ring once the broadcast returned. Waller introduced Saints as a “Temu Labubu Grayson Waller.”

Femi said that Saints has been looking past the NXT brand and anticipating his call-up, “so you can carry Cody Rhodes’ bag.” He said that their No Mercy matchup will serve as a way to remind Saints that he can carry as many bags as he wants, but he can’t carry the NXT title.

Saints called Femi a “pampered athlete,” talking about how he went directly from a college athletics career to a WWE contract. Saints said that he has gambled on himself for years in wrestling, and those bets will pay off at No Mercy.

This solid back-and-forth was cut off by Trick Williams, who, from the stage, said that Oba Femi still owes him a shot at the NXT title. Waller interjected with an idea: What if, on next week’s NXT, we do Femi vs. Williams in a title versus title match, with the winner facing Saints at No Mercy? Both Femi and Williams liked this idea.

The segment came to a close as Femi claimed that he will beat Williams and Saints next week. It hadn’t been confirmed yet, but it seems like that match will happen next week.

In a backstage clip, Charlie Dempsey said that he’s going to Japan for a month, and that Wren Sinclair needs to hold down the fort of the No Quarter Catch Crew while he’s gone – that should be relatively easy, since the group isn’t really up to anything nowadays. Bobby Roode and Joe Hendry both walked into the frame, causing their themes to hit. Roode told Hendry that he needs to start focusing on the NXT title, advice that Hendry liked.

Finn Balor stands alongside Myles Borne

In an unexpected appearance, Lexis King hit the ring for a segment. King called the Black & Gold era of NXT “overrated” (this is the Full Sail equivalent of making fun of a city’s local sports team for cheap heat).

King is still focused on Myles Borne, whom he said he will face in a Lights Out match next week, as confirmed by General Manager Ava. This promo was cut off by Finn Balor, who walked out to the music he famously used during his NXT stint.

Balor’s usually a heel, but it’s a surprise to nobody that he got a hero’s welcome in his old home.

This Balor entrance distracted King, and allowed Borne to attack him from behind. After getting King to the mat, Borne allowed Balor to come off the top with a Coup de Grace as the segment came to an end.

Ripley, Vaquer & Valkyria beat Fatal Influence with help from Lola Vice

The main event of the night saw the Fatal Influence trio of Jacy Jayne, Jazmyn Nyx and Fallon Henley attempt to overcome main roster wrestlers Lyra Valkyria, Stephanie Vaquer and Rhea Ripley. This continued a busy week for Vaquer, who wrestled Kairi Sane on Monday and will meet IYO SKY for the WWE Women’s World Championship at Wrestlepalooza on Saturday.

Fatal Influence got the jump on the main roster crew, attacking the trio as they were still posing on the ring apron. The attack only got them an advantage for the first few moments, as it didn’t take long for Vaquer to get back into the match against Jayne.

Ripley had an impressive spot just before the break, picking up Nyx for a Razor’s Edge and tossing her onto the ramp at ringside, with the other two Fatal Influence members catching her fall.

Fatal Influence isolated Valkyra in the heel corner during the commercials. Valkyria finally got out of the ring after hitting Jayne with a sit-out powerbomb, setting up for a hot tag to Vaquer.

Vaquer scored a double knees in the corner to both Nyx and Henley. She tried for an SVB to Nyx but was stopped by Jayne. This delay allowed Nyx to attack Vaquer, scoring a flashy double-team Pele Kick alongside Henley at one point.

Vaquer rolled out of the heel corner and tagged in Ripley, who strung together a series of moves against Jayne. After scoring a fallaway slam, she tried for a Razor’s Edge. Henley prevented the move, but after Vaquer got into the ring, the main roster duo remained in control.

Vaquer and Ripley delivered stereo Devils Kisses to Henley and Jayne, this tore the roof off the building. A defeated Jayne attempted to flee the match through the stage, but was blocked by Lola Vice, who she’ll face at No Mercy in a women’s title match.

Vice knocked Jayne back into the ring with a spinning backfist. Ripley then delivered a Riptide for the pinfall win in 10 minutes.

Before the show went off air, we returned to backstage, where NXT Champion Oba Femi and TNA World Champion Trick Williams were seen facing off. That match is official for next Tuesday – one man will walk out with both belts.
