New Japan Pro Wrestling announced on Sunday that its initial ticket allotment for Wrestle Kingdom 20 has sold out.

The announcement came seven weeks before the annual January 4 event at the Tokyo Dome. In a social media post, NJPW confirmed that extra seating will be opened following the strong demand.

THANK YOU! We have SOLD OUT our configuration for Wrestle Kingdom 20 in the Tokyo Dome, seven weeks in advance! Extra seating will be opened in the coming days, you can still have a chance of making it!

Sales for the event have been driven by the retirement match of Hiroshi Tanahashi. He will face longtime rival Kazuchika Okada, who made his first NJPW appearance in over a year last weekend to issue the challenge.

The “sold out” configuration refers to the first phase of tickets released, which includes the floor seats and the primary 1st floor stands.

On November 4, 2025, NJPW announced the event had sold 31,548 tickets. All Arena A, B, and C seats, and the one-million-yen “Tanahashi Retirement Special Seats” are now sold out.

The company did not announce how many seats were on sale in the initial configuration. The extra seating mentioned by the company likely refers to the upper sections of the stands, which in the past have been held back until initial demand is met.

The event could now be on pace to challenge NJPW’s modern paid attendance benchmark of 40,008 fans, set on the first night of Wrestle Kingdom 14 in January 2020.

While much larger attendance figures were announced for shows in the 1990s, those numbers are widely considered to have been inflated.

The current lineup for the January 4 show is:

  • IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Konosuke Takeshita vs. IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion Yota Tsuji – Winner Takes All Match

  • Hiroshi Tanahashi Retirement Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada

  • NEVER Openweight Championship: EVIL (c) vs. Aaron Wolf

  • NJPW Strong Women’s Champion Saya Kamitani vs. IWGP Women’s Champion Syuri – Winner Takes All Match

  • IWGP Junior Heavyweight Title #1 Contendership: El Desperado vs. Kosei Fujita vs. Taiji Ishimori vs. SHO
