Decorated boxer Katie Taylor has a clear interest in a matchup against UFC Hall of Famer Ronda Rousey.
39-year-old Taylor, who spent years as an accomplished amateur boxer before capturing numerous world titles on the pro scene, is reportedly in advanced talks to face Rousey in a boxing match next year.
Rousey, who comes from an Olympic Judo background but is best known for her career as an MMA fighter and later a professional wrestler, hasn’t competed in a combat sport since she lost to Amanda Nunes in late 2016.
A potential clash between the two is being targeted for next summer in Las Vegas. The bout has “drawn the interest of Netflix,” and, per recent comments, clearly also the intrigue of the semi-retired Taylor.
“[Rousey’s] an iconic figure herself in female sport,” Taylor said at the World Boxing Council’s convention in Bangkok, Thailand, this week, per BoxingScene. “She has an amazing mentality. You don’t get to the position she’s in without a fantastic mind, without a fantastic mentality. It’s just a very interesting fight. Seeing all the headlines this morning [after reports of the fight surfaced], I was thinking, ‘OK, I’m up and ready for this fight.’”
Taylor went on to say that the matchup is “an absolute privilege” and “makes sense.”
Taylor is best known for her trilogy of fights against Amanda Serrano, two of which aired on Netflix. The Irish boxer won in her third meeting against Serrano earlier this year, prevailing in the main event of a Madison Square Garden card.
Rousey has never competed in a boxing matchup. While she has won MMA bouts via KO before, a majority of her victories came via first-round armbar.
