Ethan Page successfully defended the NXT North American Championship against AAA’s Mr. Iguana at NXT Deadline.

The match in San Antonio marked Page’s first title defense on NXT programming since defeating El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr.

Page secured the victory at the 8:33 mark after hitting the Twisted Grin to retain his title.

The contest was built on issues stemming from Page and Chelsea Green recently winning the AAA World Mixed Tag Team Championships from Iguana and La Hiedra, as well as Iguana stealing Page’s car.

Iguana utilized mind games early, “playing dead” after an initial slam to confuse the champion. Page eventually took control by sending Iguana into the steel steps and delivering a DDT.

The challenger introduced his puppet, La Yesca, into the contest, prompting Page to disrespect the object by spitting on it and tossing it up the ramp. The action sparked a rally from Iguana, who connected with a series of chops and a DDT.

A major counter occurred on the turnbuckles, where Iguana reversed an attempted Ego’s Edge into a super hurricanrana. Iguana followed up with a dive to the floor and a diving headbutt back inside the ring for a near-fall.

The champion ultimately cut off Iguana’s momentum, throwing him from the top rope before executing the Twisted Grin to end the match.
