One Down, On to the Next

The first Raw in the post John Cena era kicked off with Gunther in the ring getting booed. Gunther cut a thirty-second promo, gloating about forcing John Cena to tap out “like a little bitch”. Gunther faked leaving twice, then returned, stood on the announce desk, and said it was his time now. It felt like they expected incredible heat, but it was just your normal level of heel boos.

The cameras followed Gunther into the back, where he ran into Tozawa, Otis, and R-Truth, all of whom were upset with him. Adam Pearce asked if Gunther was proud and called him an asshole, sending him out of the building. Finally, he ran into AJ Styles in the parking lot and did the “You Can’t See Me” motion before driving off.

Why was everyone so mad at him for winning a scheduled match? It made no sense. This did not work the way they wanted it to.

The Usos vs. The New Day

The first match of the night was The Usos taking on The New Day. Grayson Waller got a shot in before the referee’s back, allowing Woods & Kingston to gain control as the show went to commercial. Upon return, Jey finally made the tag to Jimmy, and he started mounting some offense. Waller got involved again, and the New Day continued the beatdown until Jey got the hot tag as the show went to another commercial. After the break, Waller got involved yet again and got ejected. Both teams went back and forth until The Usos hit the 1D for the win.

A subtitled video package aired with Asuka and Kairi Sane challenging Iyo Sky and Rhea Ripley to a match on January 5th from Brooklyn.

Backstage, The Vision was celebrating their decimation of LA Knight last week, and Bron Breakker suggested they do the same to CM Punk tonight. Paul Heyman said he didn’t know who the Masked Man was, but he was happy for the help. Heyman then pulled Breakker aside and asked him to hold off on taking out Punk, as he was a mere three weeks away from his World Heavyweight title shot. The announce team reported that LA Knight was out indefinitely with a cracked sternum.

Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky came down to the ring, and as they were making their entrance, Asuka appeared in the crowd and hit Ripley with the “poison mist”. The tag champions attacked the challengers, ultimately ending with Sky putting herself in the way of an Insane Elbow on Ripley.

Women’s Intercontinental Championship

Next, Maxxine Dupri defended her Intercontinental Championship against American Made’s Ivy Nile. This was Nile’s first main roster televised match since Evolution this past July. Nile controlled the early portion of the match, with Dupri showing some new offense that Barrett & Tessitore said she learned from Natalya. Dupri then started going for the Ankle Lock, but Nile kept escaping. Finally, Dupri locked it in, and Nile tapped out.

A promo package aired featuring performances by Oba Femi, Sol Ruca, Joe Hendry, Je’Von Evans, and Leon Slater from Saturday Night’s Main Event. Backstage, Je’Von Evans was speaking with Adam Pearce when El Grande Americano and Los Americanos interrupted, asking why they weren’t featured on SNME. Pearce made a match between Evans and Rayo Americano next week on Raw.

Punk and Bron

CM Punk was out next and said he wasn’t cleared to compete or fly for the last two weeks. Punk insulted the Steiner family’s intelligence and said that Breakker couldn’t beat him without help. Punk challenged Breakker to bring The Vision as well as his “dumb father and his dumber brother Scott.” Punk finished by saying even with Steiner Math GTS = 123. This seemed heartless, even for Punk.

Backstage, the Judgment Day lamented that JD McDonagh was out injured and Finn Balor was “with him”. They turned their focus to Raquel’s title match against Stephanie Vaquer. Meanwhile, the WWE video game behind them seemed to feature McDonagh against what looked like a Super-sized Hulk Hogan, and it was incredibly distracting.

Women’s World Championship

Next up, Stephanie Vaquer defended her World Championship against The Judgment Day’s Raquel Rodriguez. Rodriguez dominated the first portion of the match, going into the commercial. The crowd was near silent until Vaquer hit the Devil’s Kiss, which Vaquer just recently claimed she was more than just that one move. Nikki Bella then appeared and attacked both Vaquer and Rodriguez, leaving Vaquer lying after a Rack Attack 2.0.

Backstage, Adam Pearce questioned Paul Heyman about who was under the mask, and Heyman was steadfast that he did not know. Rhea Ripley entered and demanded a match with Asuka, and Pearce granted it for next week.

Elsewhere backstage, Rey Mysterio ran into CM Punk, and Punk offered to watch Mysterio’s back.

Even deeper backstage, AJ Styles and Dragon Lee were asked about The Usos’ reunion and their defeat of The New Day. The Tag Team Champions went to talk to Adam Pearce about a match. Nikki Bella then appeared and wouldn’t apologize for attacking Vaquer. Nikki said that she was a legend, and Stephanie and Raquel should be shining her boots.

Announced for Next Week:

  • Bayley vs. Roxanne Perez
  • Je’Von Evans vs. Rayo Americano
  • Rhea Ripley vs. Asuka

Still backstage, Bayley congratulated Maxxine on her win. Lyra Valkyria entered and asked about Bayley’s loss to Sol Ruca this past Saturday. Valkyria then coaxed the “bad” side of Bayley out intentionally after noticing she was doubting herself.

Rey Mysterio vs. Logan Paul

Next, Rey Mysterio took on Logan Paul with Paul Heyman in his corner. Paul controlled the early goings with Rey fighting from underneath. Mysterio kept going for the 619, but Logan avoided it. The Brons started marching down to the ring, but Punk appeared, hitting them with chairs and chasing them to the back. Heyman passed the Brass Knuckles to Paul, but Rey finally hit the 619 instead. Rey picked up the brass knuckles, but the Masked Man appeared and stomped Rey onto the apron. Logan Paul then hit the Superstar Splash for the win. Punk returned and chased The Masked Man into the crowd. He then removed his mask and revealed himself to be Austin Theory. Bron Breakker speared CM Punk and stood over him, holding the World Heavyweight Championship as the show ended.
