Former World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua has been injured in a car accident in Nigeria that killed two people.

The crash occurred around 11 am local time on Monday (5 am ET). Authorities stated that a black Lexus SUV carrying the boxer collided with a stationary truck near Sagamu, Ogun State, in the southwest of the country.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), five adult males were involved in the accident. Two passengers were killed, while Joshua sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. Two others reportedly escaped unharmed.

The FRSC stated that preliminary findings suggest the vehicle was traveling above the legal speed limit. The agency indicated the car lost control during an “overtaking maneuver” before striking the truck parked on the roadside.

Images circulated on social media appeared to show the 36-year-old wincing in pain while being assisted from the wreckage. Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo confirmed Joshua was receiving treatment at an undisclosed location.

Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn told Daily Mail Sport that he was attempting to contact Joshua. Hearn noted that he did not want to speculate but that the boxer “appears OK” based on images he had seen.

Joshua was visiting the country following his victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19. The fight ended a 14-month hiatus for the boxer, who is expected to face Tyson Fury in 2026.
