New Japan Pro Wrestling reported an attendance of 46,913 fans for Sunday’s Wrestle Kingdom 20 event at the Tokyo Dome.

This figure represents the largest audience for the annual January 4 show since the promotion adopted the ‘Wrestle Kingdom’ branding in 2007.

The number surpasses the previous record for the brand set at Wrestle Kingdom 14 in 2020. That event drew 40,008 fans for the first night of a double-header, which was, at the time, the highest attendance in recent years.

The historic turnout was driven by the retirement match of Hiroshi Tanahashi. He concluded his in-ring career in a loss to long-time rival Kazuchika Okada.

In the night’s championship main event, Yota Tsuji defeated Konosuke Takeshita to capture the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.
