Don Callis Family takes down Death Riders in six-man action
This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, live from The Pearl Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada, opened with trios action between two of the promotion’s top factions. Jon Moxley, PAC and Daniel Garcia of the Death Riders met Josh Alexander, El Clon, and Konosuke Takeshita from the Don Callis Family.
There were frequent tags early on in the match, giving a spotlight to all six men involved. El Clon had a fun exchange with PAC, as the Luchador continues to impress quite early into his AEW run. The Don Callis Family had the advantage as the show went to a break.
PAC dodged a kneedrop out of the corner from Alexander as the show returned, allowing him to tag out. In next was a showdown between two of the top stars in the match, Moxley and Takeshita. A back-and-forth striking exchange was won by Moxley, giving the Death Riders an advantage as Garcia tagged into the match.
Garcia and Moxley did a double-team Dragontamer and Curbstomp, but a follow-up pin attempt was broken up by Alexander. Clon took out PAC at ringside with a moonsault, Moxley dropped both Alexander and Clon with a tope suicida.
Back in the ring, Takeshita caught Garcia with a Blue Thunder Bomb, giving him a near fall. He tried to follow up with a Powerdrive Knee, but Garcia escaped it. After a series of reversals, Takeshita scored a piledriver into a deadlift German Suplex.
Alexander and Clon got a shot in on Garcia before Takeshita hit the Powerdrive Knee upon second attempt, but Garcia shockingly kicked out again! However, his toughness didn’t change the result, as a Raging Fire brainbuster from Takeshita finally put him away in 13 minutes. Fun opener, and I’m really looking forward to whenever we get to see Moxley and Takeshita for the Continental title.
Backstage, Swerve Strickland made it clear that he’s remaining focused despite getting eliminated from world title contention last week.
OC and Storm pick up win, Darby Allin gets kidnapped
A video package about Will Ospreay’s road to recovery following neck surgery played. Feel like this is the first time we have heard any real mention of him on TV ever since he was written off the program last year.
In a standby match of sorts, we saw the newly-formed duo of Orange Cassidy and Toni Storm in action. They faced Jordan Oasis, who had a very brief run as a WWE ID talent last year and was returning to AEW programming for the first time since 2022, and 21-year-old Brittnie Brooks, coming back to AEW after two years away. This was to build up the upcoming bout against Marina Shafir and Wheeler Yuta of the Death Riders at Grand Slam Australia, with the losing team agreeing to shave their head.
Storm channelled her inner OC with new Canadian Tuxedo-style denim gear. Like their Collision match, this was a quick one. Oasis ate a hip attack from Storm then an Orange Punch from Cassidy to end the match in just under three minutes.
After the match, Storm and Cassidy reflected on their fears about having to lose their hair. Luther looked frustrated as Storm listed off different words to describe how undesirable a bald head is. However, Storm ended the promo by proclaiming that they aren’t going to lose.
We saw a clip of Clark Connors and Gabe Kidd of the Bullet Club War Dogs attacking Darby Allin outside the venue earlier today. Kidd tossed Allin head-first into an AEW production truck, then we saw a cameo from Connors’ Wheel-san tyre weapon! Allin was shoved into the back of a car and abducted by the duo.
Hangman beats Mark Davis, sets sights on world title shot
The third match of the evening saw former world champ Hangman Adam Page face off against Don Callis Family member Mark Davis. With Page still in the running for a shot at MJF’s world title, a win here was crucial.
Davis was on a roll early, scoring a nasty running uppercut to Page at ringside just before the show went to a break. Page was gaining momentum as the show returned, scoring a moonsault off the guardrail then another off the top rope for a near fall.
A Razor’s Edge from Davis was reversed into a roll-up from Page, causing a two-count. Davis battled back, dropping Page with a hard lariat then a pop-up piledriver. However, Page survived by kicking out at the last moment.
Davis scored another hard lariat, but then his next move was countered by Page into a Deadeye for another near fall! Page tried for the Buckshot Lariat, but Davis countered the move. The fight went to the ramp at ringside, where Page reversed a move from Davis into a Tombstone Piledriver. He then followed up with the Buckshot Lariat to win in 11 minutes. The final stretch of this match between these two was spectacular.
Page got on the mic afterward to discuss how he will face either Kenny Omega or Andrade El Idolo in a #1 contenders match for the world title in Australia later next month. Speaking of, the match between those two was next.
Andrade beats Kenny Omega, books #1 contenders opportunity
In a high-stakes matchup to determine who meets Hangman Adam Page in a #1 contenders match at AEW Grand Slam: Australia, Andrade El Idolo and Kenny Omega faced. This was the second time these two have ever battled in a one-on-one bout, a rematch from an AAA Mega Championship matchup at Triplemania XXIX. They kept calling this a first-time encounter, so I guess we’re pretending that never happened.
The match went to ringside early on, where Andrade gave Omega a suplex onto the mat. The two men went to the top rope once they returned to the ring, where Omega delivered a superplex for a two-count.
Omega landed his “You Can’t Escape” moonsault out of the corner for another near fall. Andrade was thrown into the ropes but responded with a forearm to the head, dropping Omega to the mat.
Andrade started searching for a Figure Four, but Omega countered it into a roll-up pin attempt. Andrade hit a Three Amigos, rolling to ringside before hitting the third slam onto the floor. The commentary kept talking about how four women at ringside were swooning over him. He scored a corkscrew dive to the outside onto Omega just before a break.
Omega dodged a top-rope moonsault from Andrade just as the show came back. The former AEW world champ tried for a running knee strike in the corner, but Andrade got out of the way then successfully applied the Figure Four.
Omega reversed the submission, but Andrade got out of it by reaching the ropes. Omega and Andrade went back-and-forth with strikes, an exchange which ended after Omega hit a pair of Snap Dragon Suplexes. Omega sent Andrade into a corner of the ring for a V-Trigger, then put the Don Callis Family member on the top rope.
Omega started to set up for a One-Winged Angel off the middle rope, although Andrade reversed it into a hurricanrana. Andrade scored his El Idolo DDT finisher, but Omega just barely kicked out in time.
Andrade landed a running double-knee to the head in a corner of the ring. Omega escaped a second DDT from Andrade, beginning another striking exchange. Omega got the better of this duel, flooring Andrade with a knee to the head.
Omega tried to land a V-Trigger against the ropes, but Andrade countered with a beautiful spinning back elbow. As the referee was distracted, Don Callis tossed Andrade a screwdriver. An attempt to use the weapon was stopped by Swerve Strickland, who appeared on the ramp to snatch the weapon.
However, Strickland’s presence distracted the referee, allowing Andrade to drop Omega with a low blow then score his “DM” for the pinfall win in 16 minutes. Andrade is heading to Australia for a matchup against Hangman Page.
This was a really fun match. Not at the incredibly high level that Omega has reached before (an unfair standard to hold any match to), but an incredibly enjoyable TV bout. I also don’t mind this result! I thought it would be a little predictable to do Page vs. Omega, and Andrade has been putting together some great performances as of late, like he did tonight, so why not put him in a big spot!
There was a pull-apart between Omega and Strickland afterward, so it looks like that’s the next program for them.
Bayne & Ford earn title shot for Australia
Backstage, AEW Women’s World Champion Kris Statlander said that she will give Thekla another shot at her title on next week’s Dynamite, as long as she gets to choose the stipulation. Statlander will announce which stipulation she picked on Collision. Pro tip for any up-and-coming wrestlers: If you lose in a title match, just keep attacking the champ and eventually they’ll give you another shot.
It was also announced on the broadcast that Jon Moxley will defend his AEW Continental Championship against Konosuke Takeshita at Grand Slam: Australia. Awesome match.
AEW Women’s World Tag Team Champions Willow Nightingale and Harley Cameron faced Megan Bayne and Penelope Ford in a title eliminator bout next. Bayne went flying early in this match, scoring a hurricanrana then a tope suicida to Nightingale just before a break.
Nightingale found the space for a hot tag to Cameron just as the show returned after dropping Bayne with a pounce. Cameron went on a run of moves against Ford, including a Slingblade and a side slam for a near fall.
A move from Cameron was reversed by Ford into a lariat (which she kinda missed), allowing her to tag in Bayne. Ford and Bayne tried to double-team slam Cameron, but it was Cameron who got a slam, reversing it into a double suplex.
Nightingale and Cameron teamed up for a superplex to Bayne. Ford came off the top with a Blockbuster neckbreaker which took out both Babes of Wrath. Nightingale tagged back in and hit Bayne with a Spinebuster for a two-count. She tagged Cameron back in for a double-team move, but Ford blocked the move.
Ford scored a cutter to take out Nightingale, then the challenger duo scored a Doomsday Device to Cameron for the pinfall win in just under 10 minutes! It was announced only moments later that these two teams will face off for the women’s tag belts as part of Grand Slam: Australia.
With help from GoA, Ricochet turns back Jack Perry
The co-main event of the night saw Jungle Jack Perry face AEW National Champion Ricochet. For those who forgot, Perry earned this title shot with a #1 contenders match win last month.
Perry got the jump on Ricochet to start this match, diving onto the ramp with a tope suicida before the bell, then scoring a cannonball off a platform to ringside.
Ricochet reversed a dive from Perry into a backdrop suplex onto the commentary desk at the four-minute mark. Ricochet scored a Northern Lights Suplex, bridged into a second suplex, hit another on the ring apron, then a Death Valley Driver on the floor. Fun combination.
Ricochet scored a springboard lariat then another DVD for a two-count in the ring. Frustrated by Perry’s toughness, Ricochet grabbed his title from ringside and slid it into the ring. The referee predictably got distracted by this, giving Ricochet the chance to try for a low blow. However, Perry saw this coming and prevented the cheating tactic.
A fast series of counters between these two ended with a Poisonrana from Perry followed by a diving DDT. He picked up Ricochet and hit a cutter, but the champ kicked out.
Ricochet dodged a knee strike from Perry, but found himself caught in an “Snare Trap” STF just moments later. Ricochet allies the Gates of Agony came to ringside at this point. As Bishop Kaun distracted the referee, Toa Liona dragged Ricochet to the bottom rope to break the submission.
Emerging to even the odds were the Young Bucks, who took out GoA at ringside. As this brawl happened, Ricochet threw Perry face-first into his belt, which was set up against a turnbuckle. Ricochet then connected with Vertigo for the pinfall win in 13 minutes. Really fun one between these two, I’d like to see them face off in a longer, commercial-free setting where we could really see them cook.
Backstage, Gabe Kidd and Clark Connors hijacked an AEW production truck, forcing them to play footage they obtained from earlier today. The camcorder recording showed the NJPW wrestlers abandoning Darby Allin inside a bodybag in the middle of the Las Vegas desert.
Brody King upsets MJF in just 77 seconds, books title shot for Australia
This week’s episode of Dynamite wrapped up with an AEW world title eliminator, with reigning champ MJF facing Brody King. If King can pull off the upset, he will get a title fight against MJF at Grand Slam: Australia next week.
Just after the bell sounded, Hangman Adam Page’s music hit. He appeared on the ramp, distracting MJF and causing him to get on the ring apron. King capitalized on this moment, putting MJF in a chokehold on the ring apron, connecting with a cannonball in the corner, then a Gonzo Bomb piledriver for the win in just over a minute!
While I liked the idea of King upsetting MJF with a quick win, the distraction spot here felt a little goofy. Either way, a proper match between MJF and King later this month will be great, I can only imagine. Andrade El Idolo and Hangman Page got into the ring for a post-match brawl, a way to remind us that the title picture is four men. Page tried for a Buckshot Lariat to MJF, but was instead kicked in the groin. MJF was hit with another Gonzo Bomb from King, who stood tall as the show went off air.
Final thoughts
This week’s Dynamite was jam-packed with some really good wrestling. We have not one, but numerous interesting storylines surrounding the top men’s title, plus a few intriguing midcard feuds currently brewing in AEW. Even though I wasn’t too hot on how they handled the main event, this was a really solid episode of Dynamite.
