The next challenge for the IWGP Tag Team Champs, the Knockout Brothers, has been confirmed.
The highly decorated tag duo of YOSHI-HASHI and Hirooki Goto, Bishamon, earned a title opportunity against Yuto-Ice and OSKAR on Monday, winning a #1 contenders bout in the main event of a card from Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
Bishamon took down the United Empire duo of HENARE and Great-O-Khan in the main event of Monday night, putting away HENARE at the 25-minute mark with their Shoto double-team finisher.
The lengthy battle saw Bishamon battle through the physical style of Great-O-Khan and HENARE, as well as some underhanded tactics from them. This included a TTD piledriver onto a steel chair from Great-O-Khan against YOSHI-HASHI at one point, a move which threatened to end the match.
However, after nearly 30 minutes of battle, the veteran tag duo walked away with the win. They’re now set to appear on Saturday night against tag champs Yuto-Ice and OSKAR as part of NJPW’s Wrestling Redzone in Hiroshima card.
While it’s been some time since YOSHI-HASHI or Goto touched duos gold, they have a long history of success together. Bishamon are the only active NJPW tag team to have gone on four past reigns with the IWGP Tag Team Championships. They are also three-time World Tag League winners and currently hold six-man tag titles alongside Boltin Oleg.
But nobody has been able to take down the Knockout Brothers over the past 200 days. They have turned back numerous teams in recent months, beating TMDK’s Ryohei Oiwa and Zack Sabre Jr., AEW’s Gates of Agony, and the duo of Shota Umino and Yuya Uemura.
Earlier on Monday’s card, both Shingo Takagi and Callum Newman won singles matchups ahead of their Wrestling Dontaku title clash. The stand-out star of those matches was Unbound Company’s Daiki Nagai, who put up significant resistance against Newman before losing to the champ.
