Shane Haste pulled off a shocking win in Tokyo today, getting him into an exclusive club of NOAH stars.
Haste became the third-ever non-Japanese wrestler to hold the GHC Heavyweight Championship on Saturday night, dethroning Yoshiki Inamura in a stellar 31-minute showcase. Their title epic headlined NOAH’s Spring Mayhem card this weekend from Ryogoku Kokugikan.
The half-hour showdown between these two ramped up in the second half, as they were able to pack together numerous memorable moments. Inamura caught an attempted cannonball in the corner from Haste at the 15-minute mark, countering it into a powerbomb.
Haste was able to hit the cannonball upon second attempt later in the match, then, as Inamura was draped upside down from a set of turnbuckles, Haste connected with an impressive Coast to Coast dropkick.
Haste avoided a massive frogsplash from Inamura in the closing moments of the match, allowing for him to finish a long series of moves with his Bomb Valley Driver for the pinfall win.
Haste made his return to NOAH last month, reappearing in the promotion after Inamura called for an opponent with WWE experience.
Haste wrestled for NOAH from 2011 to 2016, a run that saw him go on two reigns with the GHC Tag Team Championships alongside Mikey Nicholls of TMDK. He later left the promotion for campaigns in NXT and later NJPW, both of which saw him remain focused on the tag division.
In fact, Haste has been such a career tag wrestler that Saturday marked his first singles championship run since 2008, when he had the EPW Heavyweight Championship in Australia.
The only other non-Japanese talents to have held the GHC title are El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. and Eddie Edwards.
Haste called for a title match against White Raven Squad teammate KENTA as his first bout as champion. Haste’s motivation for the match, he said, was to avenge a loss he suffered against KENTA back in 2013 when he had the title.
“I want to beat you holding this title, like you did to me all those years ago,” he said.
Inamura had held NOAH’s top title since November, shortly after he returned to the promotion after an excursion in NXT. He was an active champ during his run, defending his title six times over just a few months. A large amount of his time with the belt saw him go up against Team 2000X names, taking down OZAWA, Masa Kitamiya, Takashi Sugiura, and Alpha Wolf along the way. He also had lengthy battles against Kenoh and Kaito Kiyomiya as well.
Dragon Bane takes down AMAKUSA to begin first-ever junior heavyweight title run
A title change also occurred in the co-main event, as Dragon Bane overcame AMAKUSA to capture the GHC Junior Heavyweight Championship.
Bane and AMAKUSA worked a fast-paced sprint of a title match, both leaving the ring for a high-speed dive within the first couple of minutes. Bane showed his toughness late, kicking out after taking a pair of Crucifix Splashes from the champ.
A long series of big moves from Bane was able to put away AMAKUSA late. After hitting a top-rope Poisonrana followed by a Spanish Fly then his Santa Maria Pumphandle Driver, Bane earned the pinfall with a victory with a Twisterbane Electric Chair Driver.
AMAKUSA had a strong 121-day run with the title, first gaining it back in January when he dethroned Hiromu Takahashi. His reign included a stand-out performance earlier this year against the up-and-coming Daiki Odashima.
Bane, who currently also holds the GHC Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships alongside Alejandro, has now started his first-ever run with the singles belt. He had little time to celebrate before his first challenger, Eita, came to the ring. Bane was quick to accept a matchup against the two-time champ.
Team 2000X wins best of three against Los Tranquilos de Japon
A theme of the night was NOAH’s top heel faction, Team 2000X, in a multi-match rivalry with Los Tranquilos de Japon.
After both teams scored a win earlier in the night, the tiebreaker was a highly anticipated singles bout between Tetsuya Naito and former GHC Heavyweight Champion OZAWA.
The 18-minute contest, Naito’s first singles appearance since departing NJPW last year, was a run-in-heavy contest which went the way of OZAWA. After interference from Yoshitatsu allowed OZAWA to survive a Destino from Naito late in the bout, a second attempt of the finisher was countered by OZAWA into a backslide for the pinfall victory. Earlier moments in the match saw Team 2000X ganging up against Naito in an outnumbered beatdown, and BUSHI coming out to mist OZAWA in the face.
BUSHI overcame an unmasking from Jun Masaoka to win a no disqualification match. After blinding Masaoka with a mist to the face, BUSHI was able to re-mask himself then connect with a top-rope MX (Codebreaker) for the pinfall win.
The two new faces from the Naito-backed faction, RYUSEI and Angel Reyes, had an unsuccessful showing against Alpha Wolf and Kai Fujimura, losing in seven minutes.
Earlier in the night: Yuki Iino makes surprise appearance, NOAH reveals three major dates
Naomichi Marufuji and Kenoh snuck past The Good Brothers, as Marufuji escaped a Magic Killer then secured a roll-up pinfall at 10 minutes. The build for the match was The Good Brothers proclaiming that they are the new faces of NOAH, and would prove that by taking down two huge names in the tag bout.
DDT’s Yuki Iino made a surprise appearance early on Saturday’s card, appearing as the surprise teammate for Manabu Soya and Saxon Huxley in a three-way tag match. It was announced after the match that Iino is their new tag partner, hinting that he’ll continue to make appearances for the promotion going forward. While Iino has previously appeared in NOAH, this was his first match for the promotion since 2024.
Team 2000X’s six-foot-six giant Knull won a two-on-one match against Kid Lykos I and II, powerbombing one onto the other for the pinfall win in just four minutes. They’re clearly putting a lot of focus on building him up as this huge killer, and this match did a good job at emphasizing that.
In a surprising move, NOAH announced that “The New Year,” the brand’s annual January 1 show, is moving away from the huge Nippon Budokan in 2027. Instead, one of the company’s biggest shows of the year will take place at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.
Along with that announcement, NOAH revealed that they’re returning to Ryogoku on October 25 for Wrestle Odyssey 2, and plan to host a December 31st show titled “The New Year Eve” from Yokohama Buntai. This will put them head-to-head with AJPW’s huge December 31 show, one of that company’s biggest annual shows.
