MJF confronts what might soon be his reality
This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, live from Harra’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina, opened with a backstage interview featuring former world champ MJF. Renee Paquette reminded MJF that, if Darby Allin successfully defends his title tonight, he’s going to face him at Double or Nothing in a title-versus-hair match. MJF was asked how he feels about possibly putting his belt on the line. A stunned MJF, realizing that he could be weeks away from losing his hair, walked away from Paquette.
MJF then walked down a hall backstage where he noticed numerous bald men. Many cameos here, including Christopher Daniels, Sonjay Dutt and John Silver appeared during this moment. This row of shiny caps finished with Ricochet, who made it clear that he doesn’t like MJF’s odds in a rematch against Allin. “Don’t worry, Max,” Ricochet said. “You’re gonna look great. Just not as good as me.”
Cope, Cage, Bucks & Cassidy score win in opener
We were treated to some multi-man tag madness in the opening bout, as The Young Bucks, Cope & Cage, and Orange Cassidy teamed up to face FTR, David Finlay and Clark Connors of The Dogs, and Tommaso Ciampa.
The Bucks went on a fun hot tag run of moves early in the bout, including their high-five while hitting stereo running bulldogs. Christian Cage found himself being the isolated man as the show came back from a commercial break. Cage nearly tagged out at the 10-minute mark, but couldn’t after all of his teammates were pulled off the ring apron by his opponents.
Copeland, who was rocking matching gear with the Bucks, got into the match eventually and gave Connors an impaler in the middle of the ring after all four of his teammates hit top-rope moves from their respective corners – this was an awesome visual. Cage, who struggled to get along with his teammates in this match, tossed Cassidy over the top rope so that he could land on two of their teammates.
Cage hit a dive to the outside then Copeland tried for a dive, but as he came running off the ropes he ran into a Shatter Machine from FTR! This was a slick spot. Cassidy got into the match to break up a pin attempt.
Copeland dodged a spear from Connors, causing the Dog to accidentally take out Dax Harwood with the move instead. Connors found himself isolated in a four-on-one beatdown in the ring. He ate an Orange Punch, a pair of Superkicks, then a spear from Copeland to end the match in just under 16 minutes. Frantic, fun opener for this week’s show. Hard not to like that. Cage was sporting a small cut near his left eye after the match.
Next, we saw the latest clip of Will Ospreay training with the Death Riders, trying to toughen himself up ahead of his in-ring return tonight. Jon Moxley gave Ospreay another pep talk: When you go out there tonight to fight, don’t go out to “protect” youself. Go out there to “give.”
Speedball earns quick win, Ricochet updates Stampede team
In a backstage promo, Ricochet revealed that his roster for the upcoming Stadium Stampede match will include the Gates of Agony, Mark Davis, Andrade El Idolo, and The Dogs. If you need a refresher, Chris Jericho’s team features: Jack Perry, Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks, and The Hurt Syndicate.
Speedball Mike Bailey was in a quick showcase match next, going head to head with Westbrook – a North Carolina-based indie wrestler who mainly goes by the name BK Westbrook. The DPW, wXw and GCW alum was making his first-ever AEW appearance.
This was a quick showing for Bailey, who found the pinfall in 67 seconds after scoring their Ultimo Weapon finisher out of the corner.
The latest – 8:55 p.m. ET: Brian Cage returns in title match against Kevin Knight
Up next, we saw Bailey’s teammate, TNT Champion Kevin Knight, appear in an open challenge. Who answered the open challenge? Brian Cage! This was Cage’s first AEW TV match since March 2025, a long absence due to injury.
Knight had a nasty landing after going to the outside with a tope suicida. Cage slammed Knight stomach-first onto the ring apron, giving him the advantage just before the break.
Knight caught Cage with a springboard dropkick after the show returned from commercials. He tried to do a dive over the top rope and to the outside, but Cage caught him at ringside! Cage tried for a powerbomb onto the ring apron, but Knight reversed into a hurricanrana which sent Cage into the steel steps. After the champ hit a leaping clothesline, the fight returned to the ring.
Speedball Bailey knocked down Cage teammate Lance Archer at ringside with a superkick. This distracted Knight, allowing Cage to hit him with a springboard suplex. The brawl between Speedball and Archer continued, with the Canadian going flying with a springboard moonsault to the outside.
Back in the ring, Knight earned a near fall from his classic high-angle DDT. A hurricanrana in the corner from Knight was attempted to be countered into a powerbomb, but Knight eventually followed through with the move (this was clunky). Knight then finished the match with his top-rope UFO Splash. This match wasn’t without many hiccups, which certainly knocked it down a peg. Knight is still fun, nonetheless, and it’s nice to see Cage finally back.
After the match, Speedball Bailey got on the mic and gave credit to Knight, calling him a future world champion. “One day, you can be a champion here as well,” Knight said.
Bailey said he wants to face the winner of tonight’s match between Konosuke Takeshita and Darby Allin. It felt like they were teasing before Knight’s match that Bailey would want a shot at the TNT belt, so it surprised me that the segment ended here.
