Ronda Rousey submits Gina Carano in seventeen seconds, indicates she will not fight again

Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano placed the MMA industry into a time machine on Saturday, and Rousey finished the fight in trademark fashion.

The months of promotion and intrigue behind Netflix and Most Valuable Promotions’ entry into MMA came down to the main event between the two most influential female fighters in the sport’s history.

Carano was doing the near-impossible: returning to the cage 17 years after she last competed and fighting an ex-champion and Olympic medalist.

Rousey instantly took Carano down and maneuvered to the mount position before locking on an armbar and instantly submitting Carano in seventeen seconds.

There was nothing to take from the fight beyond a massive disparity despite Rousey’s nine years of inactivity since her last fight.

The immediate question was whether Rousey would fight again and play the centerpiece role of Netflix’s MMA strategy. However, Rousey reflected on the fight by stating, “There’s no way I could have ended it better than this” and repeated her desire to have more children, indicating she has no plans of fighting again.

Carano seemed disappointed that she didn’t get to show any striking and at least seemed to entertain the small chance of fighting again. She admitted that being gone for seventeen years and being 44 years old is “a lot” and joked that she wished she had fought a striker.

The impact of this fight will not be judged on the result, but on how Saturday’s show performs on Netflix. That will dictate the streamer’s desire for more MMA.
