An injury has brought a sudden end to Shota Umino’s G1 Climax run this year.
NJPW announced Wednesday that former IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion Umino has suffered a concussion, causing him to withdraw from this summer’s G1 tournament.
The announcement means Umino will exit the round robin tour after just one appearance, losing to Zack Sabre Jr. at the company’s Chicago event last weekend. The tour is scheduled to continue on Saturday.
Umino’s remaining matches in the B Block will be forfeited, NJPW confirmed this week.
29-year-old Umino was competing in his fourth G1 tour. He entered the tournament with the goal of getting back some momentum, having dropped the Global Heavyweight title to Gabe Kidd just days before the G1 started.
