Nick Aldis prevented Gunther from stealing a victory at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, ensuring CM Punk will defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes in a singles match at SummerSlam.

Punk and Rhodes defeated Gunther and Sami Zayn at Madison Square Garden under a stipulation that would have added both losing wrestlers to the SummerSlam title match had they won.

The finish followed a referee bump during a chaotic closing sequence. Rhodes accidentally struck Punk with a Cody Cutter after Gunther moved out of the way, leaving both partners vulnerable.

Gunther retrieved the Undisputed WWE Championship and struck Rhodes with it before delivering a powerbomb. A second referee ran to the ring and began counting the pin, but Aldis pulled him outside before he could reach three.

The SmackDown General Manager then took the championship belt and hit Gunther with it. Punk followed with the GTS and placed Rhodes on top of Gunther before Aldis sent the original referee back into the ring to count the pin.

Punk versus Rhodes will now remain a one-on-one match for the Undisputed WWE Championship at SummerSlam.
