Callum Newman scored a massive win on Wednesday night, taking down decorated technician Zack Sabre Jr. in B Block G1 action.

The main event of NJPW’s G1 Climax 36 Night 5 show saw Newman sneak by Sabre Jr., escaping a penalty kick and instead rolling up the fellow Briton for the pinfall victory at 20 minutes.

The finish, which emerged following a physical battle which included a prolonged duel in the ringside area, moved Newman to six points in total. He’s now tied for first in the B Block alongside three others who appeared on Wednesday’s show.

Drilla Moloney pulled off a surprising win in the co-main event, overcoming Yuya Uemura to remain in the leading pack of the B Block. Avenging a loss he suffered in this year’s New Japan Cup, Moloney connected with a Drilla Killa piledriver for the pinfall victory.

HENARE won a hard-hitting showdown against OSKAR, earning a pinfall after a Hammerhead headbutt then a powerbomb. OSKAR, one-half of the Knockout Brothers, jumped ahead in his debut tournament run with back-to-back wins to start. Now, following losses to Gabe Kidd and HENARE, he’s settling into the middle of the pack, where many expected him to land.

The final undefeated run in the tournament came to an end on Wednesday, as Aaron Wolf had his 0 snatched by Gabe Kidd. AEW’s Kidd, who wore a gi to the ring to mock Wolf’s judo past, caught the Olympian with a knee strike then a piledriver to end the back-and-forth bout. Kidd has now scored two wins in a row after losing to Drilla Moloney in his opening match.

Ren Narita, who was originally scheduled to face Shota Umino on Wednesday’s card, was given two points via forfeit. Umino withdrew from the tournament last week after suffering a concussion.

The G1 will take a few days off, returning on Saturday with a card from EBARA WAVE Arena in Tokyo. An evening highlighting A Block action will be headlined by IWGP Heavyweight Champion Yota Tsuji facing Shingo Takagi.
