The semi-finals for this year’s NJPW G1 Climax are set.
Yuya Uemura and Callum Newman have made it out of this year’s B Block, it was confirmed following action on Thursday night in Korakuen Hall.
Callum Newman secured his semi-finals spot in the main event, beating United Empire ally HENARE in a 23-minute showdown. A late sequence in the match saw Newman escape a Henare Bomb, then score his Make Way finisher for the pinfall.
Yuya Uemura, a favorite for many to win the B Block, made it through to the semis after beating OSKAR in a 17-minute co-main event.
Much like Uemura and Newman, AEW’s Gabe Kidd finished B Block action with 12 points (equivalent to six wins). His run ended strong, putting away Ren Narita in a shocking two-minute result this morning. But, due to losses against Newman and Uemura earlier in the tournament, tiebreaker calculations ruled that Kidd wouldn’t advance into the knockout bracket portion of the tournament.
Zack Sabre Jr. wrapped up this year’s G1 tournament with a victory over Aaron Wolf. While Sabre Jr. racked up four-straight wins near the end of his G1 run this year, a slow start which saw him drop four of his first five bouts set him back in a way that he was never able to rebound from.
The semi-finals will see Uemura meet defending IWGP champ Yota Tsuji, and Ryohei Oiwa battling with Newman. Knockout round action will begin Saturday at Ryogoku Sumo Hall in Tokyo as part of a doubleheader from NJPW in the prestigious venue.
