Dirty Dom opens the night with a win
Before the main card kicked off, the pre-show saw AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio face off against Joe Hendry. The rest of Judgment Day were at ringside to support Mysterio. The Mega Champ caught Hendry off guard with a dropkick to start. Hendry got back into the match moments later, holding Mysterio upside down for over 10 seconds before completing a huge brainbuster.
Liv Morgan and JD McDonagh got between these two as the fight went to ringside. Hendry dropped McDonagh with an uppercut to the jaw. This slight distraction gave Mysterio some time to recover and get back into the fight with a tope suicida.
McDonagh got a cheap shot in on Hendry as the referee was distracted by Mysterio. Back in the ring, Mysterio got a two-count after a springboard senton. Hendry started to mount a comeback at the four-minute mark, catching a crossbody from Mysterio and reversing it into a fallaway slam.
Hendry’s Hit Single discus lariat was reversed by Mysterio into a neckbreaker for another two. Hendry countered a tornado DDT into a deadlift suplex, then scored the Hit Single upon second attempt, giving him his first near fall of the match.
McDonagh got onto the ring apron, a distraction which allowed Mysterio to knock Hendry into the ropes with a head kick. He followed up with a 619 then a frogsplash for the pinfall victory. A quick, very average match.
Afterward, Morgan got on the mic and cut a quick promo about how she’s going to beat up Stephanie Vaquer on tomorrow’s episode of Raw.
Tonight’s pre-show was hosted by announcer Joe Tessitore and The Miz.
The latest – 8:34 p.m. ET: Yachty survives five-minute challenge, Williams dethrones Corbin for U.S. title
After a short performance from Quavo, Atlanta’s own one-third of the Migos, our opening contest saw artist Lil Yachty meet Baron Corbin in a five-minute challenge. If Yachty could survive the short exhibition against United States Champion Corbin, ally Trick Williams would get another shot at his title immediately after.
Before the five-minute clock started, Corbin got on the mic and offered Yachty one more chance to back out of the beating he was about to take. “You don’t want to get blood all over these new clothes … Why don’t you just pack it up and take a hike,” Corbin said.
Yachty pretended like he was about to say something, then dropped Corbin with a right hand! The clock started and we were underway. Yachty started running around the ring to try and burn the clock. Corbin caught Yachty by the legs, and the beatdown started to ensue.
Corbin ran Yachty into barricades twice then started to take apart the announce desk. Two artists from Yachty’s Concrete music label tried to drag Yachty away from the ringside area. Corbin tossed these two men away from Yatchy then brought him back to ringside.
Yachty took a kendo stick out from under the ring and started to whip Corbin over the head with it! The champ looked like he was taking some seriously nasty shots here. Yachty’s momentum was once again broken up, as he ate a nasty lariat in the ring.
Two of Yachty’s Concrete artists got into the ring but were once again wiped out by Corbin, but this bought Yachty some time to recover. He scored an impressive hurricanrana… Then a not-so impressive crossbody out of the corner. This run of moves came to an end when Corbin wiped him out with his End of Days finisher.,
The U.S. champ could’ve gone for the pin but instead decided to make an example out of Yachty. He gave him a second End of Days. With 45 seconds to go, Corbin took a table out from under the ring. He was cutting it close here… Corbin tried for a superplex out of the corner, but Yachty prevented the move by giving Corbin a low blow! Corbin fell out of the corner, and the five-minute time limit was reached! A frustrated Corbin put Yachty through the table after the bout finished.
Per the match stipulation, Yachty surviving the time limit meant that Trick Williams was immediately given a title opportunity. Williams came sprinting down the ramp, knowing he was facing off against an already-damaged Corbin.
Corbin knocked Williams off the ring apron early on in this one, sending the challenger flying into the commentary desk. Williams worked his way out of a submission from Corbin, but ran into a hard lariat immediately after. The champ got a two-count after a modified Uranage.
Williams started to make a comeback after scoring with a clothesline then a neckbreaker. An attempted Trickshot was countered by Corbin into a chokeslam for a near fall. Corbin came running off the ropes but was caught by Williams into a Bookend Uranage. Another kick from Williams was reversed by Corbin into a Deep Six, giving the champ a second two-count.
A frustrated Corbin took the US title from ringside, but couldn’t get it through the ropes due to Lil Yachty holding onto an end of the belt. Corbin got into the ring with the belt eventually but was dropped by a huge kick from Williams for a two count! With Yachty on the ring apron and unintentionally distracting the ref, Corbin struck Williams with the title, but it still wasn’t enough for the pinfall win!
Williams reversed out of an End of Days, then caught Corbin with a Trickshot kick for the pinfall win in 11 minutes. Williams has regained the WWE United States Championship. Yachty is a sloppy and green talent who likely shouldn’t be wrestling, yes. And, Corbin thinking nothing could go wrong when he had all of 30 seconds to finish off Yachty was, obviously, silly. But I thought this was a fun opener, with the Williams and Corbin portion especially generating some good heat from the Atlanta crowd.
