Jordynne Grace couldn’t get her hands on Blake Monroe, but at least costs her a win

The opening match of this week’s NXT, from the Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, saw Blake Monroe take on Kelani Jordan in singles action. This match, Monroe’s second weekly TV bout since joining the WWE roster earlier this year, was made following a brawl between these two on last week’s episode.

Something worth noting: WWE sponsor Maybelline had their logo at the center of the canvas tonight. PLEs, Raw and Smackdown often have mat sponsors, but this seems like a new thing for NXT TV.

Jordan didn’t want to waste any time, jumping Monroe before the match officially started. Monroe slowed Jordan’s momentum just a minute into the match, getting a two-count after hitting a spinning sidewalk slam and then a basement dropkick.

As this match started, we were shown the feet of someone arriving outside the venue, although it wasn’t revealed who specifically exited the car – we’d find out who in just a few minutes. Back to the match: Monroe hit Jordan with a Swingblade and then tried for a splash in the corner, but Jordan escaped the move, giving her the chance to start mounting a comeback. Jordan hit a series of elbows to knock down Monroe, then a modified stunner for a two-count.

Jordan transitioned a kick-out from Monroe into a single-leg crab, which Monroe escaped by reaching the bottom rope. Jordan connected with an Angle Slam, but it still wasn’t enough to put away Monroe.

Jordan came off the top with a move, but Monroe reversed it into a headbutt. She scored a knee strike to the head of Jordan moments later for a two-count.

Jordan soon became the least of Monroe’s worries. Jordynne Grace, wearing a neck brace, appeared on the ramp and started to chase down Monroe (Grace was off last week’s TV after getting injured by Monroe). The former AEW Women’s World Champion high-tailed it out of the building, getting into an SUV which quickly pulled away before Grace could get her hands on her. The referee counted out Monroe, giving Jordan the win via an unexpected finish.

Backstage, Kale Dixon and Uriah Connors asked Chase U’s Andre Chase about the odds he gives them against Hank and Tank for the NXT Tag Team Championships tonight. Chase said one in a million, to which they replied, “So you’re saying there’s a chance!”

Hank & Tank were too much for Chase U’s newest students

In the first of two title bouts booked for this week’s TV, NXT Tag Team Champions Hank Walker and Tank Ledger put their titles up for grabs against Kale Dixon and Uriah Connors of Chase U. The Chase U team, still relatively early into their NXT careers, were given the shot after asking for the opportunity last week.

Connors and Dixon tried to catch Ledger sleeping early on, landing a series of superkicks and a double-team powerbomb in hopes of scoring a pinfall in the first minute of the fight. Ledger was able to get his wits about him eventually and countered a move from Connors into a head kick, giving him the opening to tag Walker into the match.

Dixon sent both Hank & Tank outside of the ring for a dive over the top after sneakily tagging into the match. Walker dodged a top-rope move from Dixon, putting Hank & Tank back into control. They scored a series of double-team moves, including their powerslam finisher. After an awkward sequence where it seemed as though Dixon didn’t kick out despite a kickout being ruled, Hank & Tank scored their powerslam finisher once again to retain in three-and-a-half minutes. An incredibly quick match.

Darkstate, in their first appearance since losing at TNA’s Slammiversary card, appeared during the post-match to attack both teams.

Backstage, Jacy Jayne was approached by Ash By Elegance’s Personal Concierge, who was sent by the TNA wrestler to warn her that she’ll lose her Knockouts title on this Thursday’s episode of Impact. Laynie Luck appeared and told Jayne to make Jazmyn Nyx shine her belts for her. Since Nyx lost last week and is in the Fatal Influence doghouse for now, Jayne said that’s a good idea and handed her belts over to Nyx.

Myles Borne sends a message to Lexis King

A grudge match was up next, as Myles Borne looked to shut up Lexis King. King has been going after Borne for weeks, claiming last Tuesday that the former NXT title challenger is faking his deafness for sympathy.

King kicked Borne in the stomach to start the match, then began shouting at him: “I know you can hear me!” A minute into the match, the heel got a two-count after coming out of the corner with a crossbody. Borne responded with a Ushiguroshi for a near fall of his own immediately after.

Borne got caught in the corner, allowing King to deliver a stomp off the ropes to his shoulder. King came out of the corner, but Borne caught him in mid-air with a dropkick. After a series of reversals, Borne tossed King out of the ring and then followed him down with a crossbody before the show went to a commercial break.

The fight went back out of the ring as the show returned, giving King the chance to send Borne into the steel stairs. He positioned Borne’s head on top of the stairs, then delivered a nasty-looking stomp. King continued to control the bout as they got back into the ring, delivering a series of kicks to the head of Borne, then a dropkick in the corner for a two-count.

King came charging out of the corner, but got caught with a snap powerslam from Borne. The ex-NQCC member started to rally some moves together, including a Belly-to-Belly suplex and a snap suplex. He lowered his right kneepad for what looked like a modified Eat Defeat, then scored a Borne Again (Zig-Zag) to win the match in nine and a half minutes.

A backstage promo from Darkstate teased that they’re “not done yet.” It looks like Cutler James is being positioned as the odd man out of the group, as he delivered a line during this promo that sort of rubbed the other three members the wrong way.

Nia Jax takes down a tough Thea Hail, brawls with Lash Legend

In her first in-ring appearance on NXT programming since 2021, Nia Jax faced off against Thea Hail. For those who forgot, Jax is back to the brand after setting her sights on Lash Legend with an attack last Tuesday. A tough Hail made the bold move of being the first one to challenge the returning Jax.

Hail got a standing moonsault in early, but it wasn’t enough to even get a one-count against Jax. After Hail failed to pick up Jax, she ate a Samoan Drop. Jax remained in control, throwing Hail out of the ring as the show went to a break.

Hail continued to struggle in this match as it returned by the six-minute mark. She tried to come running off the ropes with a move, but instead was pounced on by Jax. The main roster Jax scored a leg drop, but surprisingly, Hail remained in the fight after consuming this move.

Hail was able to reverse a move into a DDT at eight minutes. She came off the ropes with a senton, which earned her a two-count. Was an upset brewing? Nope. Hail climbed up the ropes but was tripped by Jax, causing her to take a nasty fall to the mat. Jax landed a series of hip attacks in the corner, then the Annihilator for the win in nine and a half minutes. Hail showcased her toughness against Jax, but predictably wasn’t able to do enough for a win.

After the match, Jax cut a promo on Lash Legend. “You’re not gonna make a name off my back … What the heck have you done?”

Legend cut off Jax: “You’re about to find out that force breaks under my pressure,” she said. They started brawling before security separated them.

Backstage, Jordynne Grace told NXT General Manager Ava that she’ll be cleared by the time Heatwave comes by later this month. Ava said that Grace vs. Blake Monroe is booked for the event, which will go down on August 24 in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Je’Von Evans, Trick Williams agree to #1 contenders match

NXT Champion Oba Femi came to the ring to once again ask who is next in line to try and stop his lengthy reign. “But the unfortunate answer is that no one is [next],” said Femi. “I look at this division now, the future is not looking very bright, because I’ve beaten them all. I’ve stopped them all. I’ve destroyed them all.”

Someone had something to say about this: TNA World Champion Trick Williams appeared on the stage, claiming he’s still the “biggest dog NXT has to offer.”

Femi reminded Williams that he had lost to him before. Williams said he’s not the same man who lost to Oba a few months ago.

Anyone who has been watching NXT TV in recent weeks knows another man has been on the hunt for the main title, and it’s Je’Von Evans. It’s not surprising that he came out to interrupt this exchange.

Evans got a pop out of the crowd by calling Williams “goofy as hell.” He said that Williams can barely defend the TNA title, so why should he go after Femi’s title? Evans proposed a match between him and Williams, with the winner going on to face Femi.

Femi loved the idea and liked it so much that he proposed it for tonight’s NXT. Evans was game, Williams was not. Williams instead said it should happen at the August 19 NXT, which will be in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Moose, who will challenge Williams for the TNA title at Emergence on August 15, came to the ring. Moose said he was going to take Williams’ title, then told Femi that he still has his sights on him.

Darkstate tried to jump this quartet, but the attack didn’t go as they had planned. The champs and future challengers sent the faction retreating as the show went to a break.

Backstage, Arianna Grace said she came to check on Heritage Cup Champion Stacks. Whatever this conversation was supposed to be got cut off by Lash Legend and Nia Jax, who have continued to brawl throughout the Performance Center.

Wren Sinclair was seen trying to cheer up Charlie Dempsey, who now leads a two-person No Quarter Catch Crew following the departure of Tavion Heights. In an attempt to make him happy, Sinclair summoned Joe Hendry, who popped out of a fridge after his name was mentioned.

Dempsey was not happy at all about Hendry showing up. Sinclair said only wrestling cheers Dempsey up, and thus, the solution should be for him to face Hendry next week. Looks like we’ll get that next Tuesday.

Arianna Grace, Josh Briggs help Stacks score win

NXT Heritage Cup Champion Stacks appeared in a non-title fight for the next match, facing off against Yoshiki Inamura, a match which was booked following a backstage squabble last week. Stacks jumped Inamura from behind during the NOAH talent’s entrance, getting him a headstart before the match even officially started.

Stacks mockingly tried to do Inamura’s frogsplash off the top, but was thrown down to the mat by Inamura. This kicked off a comeback series of moves from Inamura, ending with a chop which sent Stacks out of the ring. Stacks ran Inamura into the ring apron. After Stacks shouted at Inamura about how he shouldn’t dare slap him, Inamura responded by slapping him across the face once again.

Arianna Grace appeared and got in the face of Inamura, eventually slapping him – Corey Graves made the fair point that this should’ve been a disqualification. As the referee was busy getting in the face of Grace, Josh Briggs appeared from the crowd and took out Inamura. Stacks got into the ring and scored a pinfall win in three minutes.

Canadian heels Ethan Page and Chelsea Green join forces against Tavion Heights

NXT North American Champion Ethan Page appeared in the ring to gloat about his win against Santino Marella on last week’s episode. After declaring himself the greatest Canadian of all time and starting to perform “Oh! Canada,” he was cut off by Tavion Heights, who just recently started his run as a solo act free from the No Quarter Catch Crew.

Heights said Page needs to be knocked off his “maple leaf-sucking perch.” Page replied that Heights needs to learn how to walk and run before he can dance with him. A surprising cameo came moments later: Chelsea Green alongside the Secret Hervice.

Green came out to defend fellow Canadian Page. “Ethan Page is the model Canadian, second only to moi – that’s French-Canadian for ‘me,’ if you didn’t know.”

After spending some time trying to agitate Heights, Green said he doesn’t have the balls to hit a woman. “You’re right, I wouldn’t,” he said before striking Page. “But I’ll find a woman who will!” It looks like mixed tag action is on the way, with potential title implications if Heights can emerge with a win.

Fallon Henley and Jacy Jayne approached Kelani Jordan and Lola Vice in the locker room, mocking that they’ll never become champs. A fed-up Jazmyn Nyx came back from shining Jayne’s titles. She said that she got Jayne and Henley a tag match next week against Jordan and Vice, a move that two-thirds of Fatal Influence weren’t too excited about.

Lash Legend and Nia Jax were seen still brawling. Sick of the fighting, NXT GM Ava said that they’ll face off next week.

After the break, Ava set up Trick Williams vs. Je’Von Evans for NXT in Philadelphia on August 19 for a shot at the NXT World Championship. Next week, they’ll team alongside Moose and Oba Femi to face off against Darkstate.

Hank & Tank, who also got attacked by Darkstate, walked into the office demanding a fight against the group. Ava said that they’ll face two members of Darkstate for their tag team titles at Heatwave.

In a sit-down interview, Ricky Saints called for a rematch against Jasper Troy at the Philadelphia NXT, looking to avenge the count-out loss he suffered last month.

A quick rundown of next week’s NXT card was provided:

  • Lash Legend vs. Nia Jax
  • Oba Femi, Trick Williams, Je’Von Evans & Moose vs. Cutler James, Dion Lennox, Osiris Griffin & Saquon Shugars
  • Jacy Jayne & Fallon Henley vs. Lola Vice & Kelani Jordan

It was also confirmed that Trick Williams vs. Je’Von Evans & Jasper Troy vs. Ricky Saints will take place at NXT’s Philadelphia card in two weeks.

Doll distraction causes Tatum Paxley to lose against North American champ Sol Ruca

The final match of the night saw Sol Ruca put her NXT Women’s North American Championship on the line against Tatum Paxley. Quick observation: Ruca was also wearing her WWE Speed Championship, which is particularly interesting considering the show has been off air for a few weeks, and reports have surfaced about the program possibly being axed.

Paxley scored a crossbody in the corner and a knee strike to Ruca early in the match. Ruca went to the top rope for a move in the second minute but got distracted by Shawn Spears. Instead of taking out Paxley, Ruca went to the outside with a moonsault onto the rest of The Culling as the show went to a commercial break.

Paxley, who was ahead in the match throughout the break, scored a DDT for a two-count as the show returned. Paxley put Ruca into a submission, which she eventually escaped with a cartwheel. Ruca started to regain some momentum with a series of shoulder tackles, a kick, and then a neckbreaker.

Ruca got a near fall for a slam, but kept the pressure on Paxley after by landing a running knee. Paxley caught Ruca near the apron with an Enzugiri, then came off the ropes with a Whisper in the Wind for a two-count.

The match went to the top, where Ruca reversed a move from Paxley into a powerbomb. Ruca tried for a spear, but Paxley avoided, causing the champ to go into the ringpost. Paxley got a near fall from a roll-up. Ruca dropped Paxley with a kick and tried to come off the top with a moonsault, but Paxley avoided the move.

Ruca speared Paxley into the corner. They once again went to the top, where, after a slip from Ruca, Paxley countered a move into a super neckbreaker. Shawn Spears tried to slide Paxley her doll, a move which Izzi Dame tried to prevent him from doing. Paxley ended up grabbing her doll from the ring apron.

Lash Legend and Nia Jax started brawling at ringside, a fight which ended with Legend spearing Jax through a barricade. Paxley, who became too distracted by her doll, ate a Sol Snatcher from Ruca for the pinfall in 11 minutes. Paxley came close, but in the end came up short against the Women’s North American Champion. Ruca celebrated alongside Zaria as the show went off air.
