Oba Femi isn’t going anywhere just yet.

Femi retained his NXT Championship in the main event of Heatwave on Sunday night, keeping his reign alive after 230 days on top of the brand’s men’s division. In a physical brawl with went almost 18 minutes, Femi picked up the win in Lowell, Massachusetts this weekend.

A title win was dramatically taken away from Evans in the closing minutes of the bout. After the original referee was inadvertently struck and knocked out of the ring, Evans hit Femi with a pair of cutters, including one out of the corner.

A new referee hit the ring and counted to three after Evans went for a pin attempt, convincing the live audience that they had seen a new champion crowned. But, as the original referee got to his feet, he pointed out that Femi had a leg under the bottom rope, forcing a rope break. After the two referees debated, they eventually chose to keep the bout going.

You can see the sequence below:

Femi dodged a dive off the top from Evans, then tossed the challenger over the top rope and through a commentary table at ringside. Back into the ring, Femi scored his Fall From Grace finisher to retain. While the audience was briefly frustrated by the false finish, Femi’s stunning finishing sequence got them back into the match.

Femi captured the NXT Championship in January, dethroning Trick Williams in a three-way bout. He has defended his title nine times since then, including five different PLE appearances.

At 230 days, Femi is currently on the seventh-longest run in the NXT title’s history. Nobody has put together a longer campaign with the belt since Bron Breakker’s 362-day stint, which concluded in April 2023.

Evans previously challenged for the title in April, but came up short in a triple threat match. He earned a second chance against Femi by prevailing in a #1 contenders match against Trick Williams on Tuesday’s episode of NXT TV.

The co-main event spotlight of the evening saw wrestling Olympian turned WWE talent Tyra Mae Steele make her first-ever PLE appearance, teaming with Tavion Heights against Chelsea Green and Ethan Page in a USA vs. Canada-themed mixed tag match.

While Steele got some shine, including a German Suplex which saw her lift both Ethan Page and The Secret Hervice’s Alba Fyre at the same time, interference caused her duo to lose. A superkick from Fyre gave Green the opportunity to connect with an Unprettyher, earning her a pinfall win in nine minutes.

While Heights and Steele were meant to be the babyface team in this match, the crowd was incredibly supportive of Green, essentially flipping the roles in the match and even causing Team USA to receive boos.

Blake Monroe won her first-ever NXT PLE singles bout, overcoming Jordynne Grace in a grudge match which first started back at Evolution last month. Monroe utilized an exposed turnbuckle for a curbstomp, then connected with a double underhook DDT to earn a pinfall in 12 minutes.

Ash By Elegance brought the Knockouts World Championship back to TNA, winning a triple threat match against Jacy Jayne and Masha Slamovich. While Jayne nearly earned a win off a Rolling Encore, the defending champ was pulled out of the ring by the rest of the Elegance Brand during a pin attempt. This gave Ash the chance to hit Slamovich with a moonsault for the win, taking the belt off an NXT talent.

The first title change of the night saw DarkState claim their first-ever gold, dethroning Hank Walker and Tank Ledger in 10 minutes. Dion Lennox and Osiris Griffin leaned heavily on outside interference from Cutler James and Saquon Shugars, helping the competing duo set up for a Doomsday Device win to claim the titles.

Hank & Tank had held the titles since Wrestlemania weekend, when they brought an end to Fraxiom’s reign. The belts are now possessed by a fast-rising group, who only made their in-ring debut as a team in April.

The opening match of the night saw Lola Vice punch her ticket to a shot at the NXT Women’s Championship, winning a #1 contenders match against Jaida Parker and Kelani Jordan.  The bout will take place at NXT No Mercy on September 27, which is scheduled for Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as revealed on Sunday night.
