Brian James, a.k.a. Road Dogg, has left his position on the WWE creative staff in a decision that the former wrestler is said to have made himself.

James, 56, has departed WWE and was first reported by Bodyslam.net with additional confirmation from other outlets.

Road Dogg has held multiple roles over the past fifteen years in WWE, from a match producer to a senior member of the writing staff.

In 2019, he left his post as head writer of SmackDown and was reassigned to a position at the WWE Performance Center to work with NXT talent, and lasted until early 2022.

He was brought back to the company in the summer of August 2022, shortly after Vince McMahon’s first resignation from the company, and named senior vice president of live events. Last year, it was reported that James had been named co-head writer of SmackDown.

This week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that James recently had his annual performance review and that the decision to leave was made by James. Fightful added that James “had been expressing his unhappiness for a while”.

James had an extensive history with WWE, going back to 1994 as a wrestler and becoming ‘The Roadie’ for Jeff Jarrett. He became the ‘Road Dogg’ as a member of the New Age Outlaws with Billy Gunn and joined the revamped DX in 1998 after WrestleMania 14, and was a popular babyface throughout the Attitude Era.

He was inducted into WWE’s Hall of Fame as part of DX in 2019.
