John Hennigan spoke about his recent Hair vs. Hair match with Ángel de Oro in CMLL, which has received strong reviews.

Chris Van Vliet spoke with the AEW talent about the match, “The match did feel fantastic. That hair match felt like one of the best matches I’ve had in years. It was the first time in a while that I like me again.”

Hennigan has been wrestling for CMLL since January under the name “Johnny Consejo” and led up to the stipulation match with Ángel de Oro on February 27 at Arena Mexico.

He spoke of the contrast with AEW, where he has been working since 2023, but has not had any matches in Ring of Honor since January, and none on AEW this year.

For me, right now in AEW, I feel underutilized, and you can’t blame anyone. It’s just how wrestling promotions work. There is only enough TV time for a certain amount of people, and those people in AEW, we’ve coined the term ‘The Island’. Those people are on ‘The Island’, so to speak, and I don’t feel like I’m on ‘The Island’ with Tony (Khan) or AEW right now. So, because of that, I feel like I’m doing 10-20% of what I’m capable of, storytelling-wise, wrestling-wise in the ring. With CMLL, I’m on their island, so I got to do everything I could, and it was cool and made me realize, yeah, I do love wrestling.

The show at Arena México drew approximately 10,000 fans for the Cabellera vs. Cabellera match, and they followed with a sold-out show at Arena Coliseo the next night, featuring Hennigan vs. de Oro vs. Esfinge.

Hennigan has been wrestling since 2002 and received a WWE contract from the third season of Tough Enough, and wrestled for the company until 2011. Following roles in Lucha Underground, AAA, and Impact Wrestling, he returned to WWE in 2020 and spent two years in the company before being released.
