Through the course of the investigation, there has been no evidence to indicate any criminal wrongdoing related to his death. This case will be closed, and will be considered solved, non-criminal.
Bollea died on July 24, 2025, at the age of 71. Police and emergency medical personnel responded to his Clearwater Beach residence after a 911 call, with the report stating that EMS and Clearwater Fire Department personnel performed CPR before he was taken to Morton Plant Hospital. Bollea was pronounced dead at 11:17 a.m.
A police supplement says the initial 911 call was made by Bollea’s wife, Melanie “Sky” Bollea, who told the call taker: “My husband, it doesn’t seem like he’s breathing.” The report states that an occupational therapist and home health aide were also heard on the call and that pre-arrival CPR instructions were given.
Investigators reviewed medical records from several providers and wrote that they showed “several medical diagnoses and multiple, extended hospitalizations and declining health over the few months preceding Mr. Bollea’s death.” The report also says home surveillance footage from the morning of his death corroborated witness accounts, and that interviewed EMS personnel did not report signs of trauma or injury.
The report notes that Bollea’s family arranged for a private autopsy. In a summary provided to police, pathologist Dr. Daniel Schultz wrote that Bollea died “exclusively from compelling natural disease, with no reasonable traumatic or terminal toxicologic contributions,” adding that “the manner of death is also natural.”
A Florida medical examiner’s report listed Bollea’s cause of death as acute myocardial infarction, and classified the death as natural. The report also noted a history of leukemia and atrial fibrillation.
Bollea was among the most recognizable figures in professional wrestling history. WWE credited him with helping the company achieve global recognition during the “Hulkamania” period of the 1980s and later playing a major role in WCW’s New World Order era in the 1990s.
