A showdown between two modern-day wrestling legends has been booked for AEW Forbidden Door later this month.

NJPW’s Zack Sabre Jr. will take on fellow former IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega as part of the upcoming AEW pay-per-view event on June 28 from the SAP Center in San Jose, California.

Sabre Jr. called for a match against Omega in a video package during this week’s AEW Dynamite.

“There’s a man I’ve not fought for over eight years,” Sabre Jr. said. “There’s a man I’ve never faced in the United States of America. And there’s a man that’s one of the best wrestlers of an entire generation. So what’s the frequency, Kenneth? Because Zack Sabre Jr. is the best technical wrestler in the world. But Kenny Omega, are you still the best? D***head.”

After the promo from Sabre Jr. aired, it was confirmed that Omega accepted his challenge and the bout was official.

Omega and Sabre Jr. have one faced off one-on-one twice. They first met back in 2013 on a 4FW card in England, then later battled in the 2018 NJPW G1 Climax. Omega emerged on top in both showdowns.

It was also confirmed that a six-on-six cage match will take place at Forbidden Door.

It’ll be Team Mark Briscoe against Team MJF at the upcoming PPV, we learned on Wednesday night. If Briscoe’s team can earn the victory, Briscoe will secure a future title shot at MJF’s AEW World Championship.

While the lineups for the match haven’t been revealed, MJF was seen attempting to recruit members of the Don Callis Family to join his squad and successfully enlisting Kevin Knight. It’s also safe to assume that Briscoe will have some help from The Conglomeration on his side.

Here’s an updated look at this year’s Forbidden Door card, which is still a few months away:

  • Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Kenny Omega
  • Team Mark Briscoe vs. Team MJF (12-Man Steel Cage Match)
  • TBD vs. TBD (2026 Women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Final)
  • Will Ospreay vs. Swerve Strickland (2026 Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Final)
