Tommaso Ciampa feels his title showdown against Darby Allin earlier this year proved what he’s still capable of doing as a wrestler.
Just before Ciampa launched into his current feud with Chris Jericho, he secured himself a show for the AEW World Championship during the month when Allin held the belt. Their late April title bout on Dynamite was a physical 18-minute contest, which stood out as one of Ciampa’s best performances since he joined the AEW roster at the start of the year.
Ciampa reflected on that match in a recent interview with Undisputed, explaining how he felt the performance showed that he’s not one to overlook, even this deep into his career.
“There’s no better way to kick off what a Tommaso Ciampa world title run would look like than that Darby match,” he said. “It was my love letter to pro wrestling. I knew what I wanted and expected it to be, but I think a lot of people maybe counted me out and thought my best days were behind me. It was very important for me to have that match with Darby and have it go as well as it did.”
Ciampa later explained that his Allin matchup shows what people could expect if he ever had a future run with the title. The former TNT champ talent threw out the idea of a future showdown against Kenny Omega for the belt.
“The next time people see an AEW world title match with Tommaso Ciampa’s name linked to it, they’re going to know they’re in for something special. Hey, maybe in a perfect world, that match would be with Kenny Omega. That would be an epic first-time clash that a lot of people thought they’d never see.”
Ciampa is booked for this Sunday’s AEW Redemption pay-per-view, going up against Jericho’s “Painmaker” persona.
