Little to no information has come from WWE following the announcement of a new tournament months back.
When retired professional wrestler John Cena appeared at WWE’s Backlash Premium Live Event (PLE) in May, he revealed that the company plans to soon launch a new tournament, The John Cena Classic.
Cena explained that the bracket will be a mix of main roster talent and NXT stars, providing a showcase for up-and-coming talent. There was also mention of the tournament involving a fan voting aspect, which would affect the bracket’s results.
But ever since that reveal, it’s been unclear when, or even if, the tournament will happen.
In a new update from Fightful Select, it’s noted that the Cena-inspired tournament “is still planned for later this year, which we’re told has a December target date, but could change.”
The new report from Fightful also sheds light on Cena’s current deal with WWE. He’s reportedly in a multi-year agreement as an ambassador for WWE. While no discussion of Cena ever wrestling elsewhere reportedly has taken place, it was noted that he’s contractually not able to anyway.
