Kenny Omega won’t bail out Will Ospreay again
This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, live from the Pearl Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada, opened with All In: London headliner Will Ospreay. 18 days before he faces Kenny Omega for the AEW World Championship, Ospreay got on the mic to discuss what’s on his mind.
A week removed from his most recent appearance in the legendary Arena Mexico, Ospreay talked about the first time he appeared at the venue a year back. Ospreay mentioned that, just before his Arena Mexico debut in 2025, he got word that his grandad had passed away.
Ospreay said that he feels a responsibility, as a member of the AEW roster, to go out and perform no matter what’s going on in his life. So, fast-forward to this year: With less than a month until he faces Omega at Wembley Stadium, why did he do a Mexico City Street Fight with Mark Davis? Because he feels he owes it to the fans.
Ospreay mentioned that Kenny Omega was at home and not present for last week’s show, implying he doesn’t have the same passion that he has. He said Omega is backstage this week. “Well done,” he sarcastically said. Ospreay then called out Omega.
It wasn’t Omega who came out, but instead Don Callis. The Don Callis Family leader went on about his time managing Omega, including his legendary lengthy initial run with the AEW world title. He reminded Ospreay that he was responsible for booking his match against Omega at Forbidden Door, and took credit for a large part of Omega’s success.
Anyway, his long spiel was to say that he feels Ospreay should join the Don Callis Family. To send the message that Ospreay can’t go on it alone, a group of the Family’s henchmen jumped him from behind. “Get the neck, get the neck!” Callis shouted. Just as Mark Davis was about to deliver a piledriver, rival Omega came in for the save. Omega wielded a pipe, swinging it around to drive the heels out of the ring.
Omega motioned as though he was going to strike Ospreay with the pipe, then stopped himself. “When you talk from the heart, you have this way of words,” Omega said. “I feel everything that you say. The problem is, Will, you wear your heart on your sleeve. And as much as you feel, you never think.”
Omega said that Ospreay is a “fool” and “sloppy,” which is why he has fallen into the tricks of Callis and the Death Riders in recent months. Omega helped Ospreay up. “Will, I hope you’ll understand, I can’t help you like this again. From here on in, it’s just me and you.”
Ospreay snatched the mic from Omega. “I appreciate the help, but I didn’t ask for it. And I’m not going to need your help, thank you.”
I thought the promos from Ospreay and Omega were fine here. Maybe one of the less impactful segments between these two lately, but I thought this was overall solid. The Death Riders and Callis Family have worked as solid vehicles to move this storyline forward, but I’d prefer in the final weeks if this rivalry was focused solely on Ospreay and Omega. Curious to see how it goes as we head down the stretch this month.
MJF books spot in All In Casino Gauntlet
The opening match of the night saw MJF, Speedball Mike Bailey, and Nick Wayne battle it out in a three-way. The winner will enter second in the All In Casino Gauntlet Match, a match where the prevailing wrestler will get a future world title shot. We learned last week that Andrade El Idolo will enter first in the upcoming bout. Commentary noted that Andrade isn’t present this week – he announced a few days back that he’s currently out of action due to injury.
MJF immediately rolled out of the ring and told the commentary desk that he’d let the two “twinks” in the match battle it out first. Bailey and Wayne had a fun exchange to start, including a Triangle Moonsault to the floor from the Canadian at one point.
MJF and Wayne teamed up to pick on Bailey. Wayne took issue with MJF going for a pin attempt at one point. MJF tried lecturing a young Wayne that he’s lucky to even be in the ring with him, and that he should let him win the match. Wayne’s response to this was a superkick, which sent MJF tumbling out of the ring.
Bailey avoided a Heatseeker from MJF, then scored a huge springboard moonsault onto both of his opponents before the show went to a break. Bailey was on a roll as the show returned, scoring a Falcon Arrow, then a Shooting Star Press onto Wayne for a near fall. Wayne answered back with a ProdigyPlex for a two-count of his own moments later.
Wayne tried for his Wayne’s World cutter out of the corner onto MJF, but was dropped mid-air with a forearm to the head. MJF followed up with a powerbomb onto his knee, but a follow-up pin attempt was stopped by Bailey, who hit a standing Shooting Star Press onto MJF.
Bailey scored an Ultimo Weapon double knees out of the corner to Wayne. But just as he was about to go for the pin, MJF got into the ring and tossed them through the ropes! MJF then locked in a Salt of the Earth submission to a hurt Wayne for the submission victory in 12 minutes. MJF is heading to All In. Similar to how he won the title at Worlds End last year, he snatched the win here. This was a great opener.
MJF cut a post-match promo about how nobody can stop him on his quest to regain the AEW world title. Andrade El Idolo’s theme cut him off, and MJF acted surprised, but it was a prank. Andrade isn’t in the building.
We saw a promo from Divine Dominion, who, from inside a pub, said All In opponents The Brawling Birds are simply British stereotypes packed into a tag persona. They dropped two pints of beer on the floor as a toast to the end of the Brawling Birds.
Jay White takes down rival in Continental tourney
The Continental Cup, a 16-man tournament for the AEW Continental Championship, continued its opening round in the next segment, as friends-turned-rivals David Finlay and Jay White faced off.
This was a match full of fun reversal spots between these two – White has always been great at that type of style. White had an intriguing spot selling neck damage late, scoring a German Suplex but letting go of an attempted bridge into a pin attempt due to the fall he took in the process.
Finlay scored a pair of DDTs, but White survived by barely kicking out in time. Another long chain of reversals ended with White scoring a huge facebuster for a two-count. A Blade Runner attempt from White was countered by Finlay into a brainbruster onto the knee, but it wasn’t enough to earn the pinfall yet.
A second brainbuster attempt from Finlay was countered into a Blade Runner by White for the pinfall win in 13 minutes. White joins the quarter-finals with Claudio Castagnoli, Orange Cassidy and Eddie Kingston. This was a solid match.
Swerve Strickland returns, eyes trios division
The next segment saw newly crowned AEW World Trios Champions, Brodido and Hangman Adam Page, appear for an in-ring interview with Tony Schiavone. The trio, known unofficially as “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly,” unseated The Demand for the titles at Arena Mexico last week.
Riding high following their title win, the team was having fun in this interview. “Y’all mind if a white boy speaks a little Español?” Hangman asked.
Just as he was about to make his promo bilingual, Page was cut off by long-time rival Swerve Strickland. This was his first time on TV since the Owen Hart Finals at Forbidden Door, a return of sorts. You wouldn’t know based on how calm and collected the commentary desk was over this moment.
Strickland said the trios champs are three people he has had bad blood with, calling it “trauma bonding.” He spent some time picking apart all three men, trying to rub salt in the wound about Page specifically no longer being able to challenge for the AEW world title. Page countered by saying that Strickland shouldn’t talk results, as he hasn’t done much this year either.
This back-and-forth was cut off by The Demand. Ricochet said this is trios business. Strickland is out there by himself, and thus has no reason to be in the ring, he said. Ricochet said that there are nine guys around Strickland who hate him, and asked him to leave before this ends with him getting beaten up.
Strickland calmly walked down the ramp past The Demand. Before he left, he said: “Oh yeah, one more thing: Brody King might be the one doing all the barking, but Ricochet is the one being the bitch.”
Page challenged The Demand to try and take the trios belts off them. Ricochet said they’ll do it, but on their time. This felt like a lame way to bring back Strickland. After a month away, his way to return is to get backed off in a segment featuring two other teams. Got it.
We were shown a clip from earlier today, where Mercedes Moné crashed an interview with All In opponent Willow Nightingale, attacking her.
Kevin Knight retains TNT champ status against Jericho
The sole title match of the night was next: TNT Champion Kevin Knight facing off against Jericho. This was a match Knight called for during last weekend’s episode of Collision.
Jericho scored a series of very labored punches to the head in the corner. He followed this up with a much better hurricanrana to the floor. Jericho scored a top-rope dive to the floor right after. Knight came flying off the commentary booth with a huge lariat as the show went to a break.
Jericho started to make a comeback as the show returned, hitting a Lionsault, then a series of shoulder tackles. Knight sent Jericho over the top rope and onto a ramp nearby, then came flying over the ropes with another impressive lariat.
Back in the ring, Jericho tried setting up for a Walls of Jericho, but Knight countered into a roll-up. They traded a series of pin attempts. Both tried using the ropes as leverage during pins, but both were caught by referee Aubrey Edwards. If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying.
Knight caught Jericho with a high-angle DDT. The champ tried for a hurricanrana out of the corner, but Jericho countered into an avalanche powerbomb for a near fall. Jericho followed up with a Walls of Jericho. Knight ally Don Callis struck Jericho in the head with a screwdriver. Jericho was initially too far away for this spot to work, but confusingly crawled towards Callis after it became clear that an interference spot was about to happen. This was awkward.
Knight scored a Coast to Coast dropkick, but surprisingly it wasn’t enough to put away Jericho. A top-rope move was countered mid-air into a Codebreaker from Jericho for a two. Knight dodged a Judas Effect. The move nearly hit referee Edwards, causing her to duck down. Capitalizing on this distraction, Knight kicked Jericho in the groin, then scored his Crash Landing Uranage for the pinfall win in 12 minutes.
Knight is incredibly talented and did a lot in this match. It felt like they did a good job of convincing us that a change could actually emerge here, especially with all the big moments Jericho survived. The messed-up screwdriver moment definitely took away from this match late.
Statlander wins singles match, gets put into upcoming title four-way
We saw a showcase match for Kris Statlander next, as the former world champ faced off against Viva Van. We saw some fun stuff from Van here, including a beautiful Rolling Thunder at one point.
Van scored a missile dropkick off the top rope, which only earned her a one-count. She put Statlander on her shoulders for a move, but Statlander escaped with a roll-up pin attempt. Statlander caught Van with a head kick, came running off the ropes with a discus lariat, then a Saturday Night Fever piledriver for the pinfall win in three minutes. This was obviously meant to be a showcase of Statlander, but I thought Van was the one who stuck out here.
Mick Foley came to the ring and announced that Statlander will be in a four-way match next week. Maya World will defend her TBS title next week against Statlander, Persephone, and Hikaru Shida. A promo from Statlander about next week’s match was cut off by Persephone and Shida, who were set to appear in the next segment.
The latest – 9:59 p.m. ET: TBS Champ World scores tag win
The co-main event saw three-quarters of next week’s TBS title match in action. Defending champ Maya World teamed with Thunder Rosa to take on Persephone and Hikaru Shida.
World got a hot tag late in this one, taking out both Shida and Persephone with a top-rope shotgun dropkick. She scored an incredibly cool fallaway slam to Persephone, transitioning into a roll-up on Shida in the process.
Rosa tagged back into the match and gave Shida a top-rope crossbody. A series of reversals between these two ended with a Falcon Arrow from Shida. A pin attempt was broken up by World.
World got back into the match and scored a snazzy cutter on Shida. Persephone tried to hold World in place, allowing Shida to strike their opponent. But World got out of the way, causing Shida to drop Persephone with a forearm to the head. World then scored a bridging fallaway slam to Shida for the pinfall win in 10 minutes.
Darby Allin, who recently called out TNT Champion Kevin Knight for a Falls Count Anywhere match at All In, cut another promo for the match. He said that Knight is doubting how far Allin will go to get revenge on him.
“If you can beat me at my own game, then you have officially lived up to the potential I saw in you all those years ago,” he said.
