AEW Collision 8/15 Results: Continental Challenge Cup quarterfinalists set, Trios champions retain, McGuinness injury doubt

The first round of the Continental Challenge Cup concluded on Saturday’s AEW Collision, with Hechicero, Nigel McGuinness and Kyle O’Reilly advancing.

Hangman Page, Brody King and Bandido also retained the AEW World Trios Championship against Jay Lethal, Blake Christian and Lee Johnson.

Toward the end of show, it was announced that Nigel McGuinness had picked up an injury during his match. An update on his condition is expected on Monday.

The episode was taped on Wednesday at the Pearl Theater at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

  • The Continental Challenge Cup quarterfinals will be determined by another blind draw. AEW will hold a selection special on YouTube on Monday.
  • AEW announced during the main event that Nigel McGuinness suffered an injury during his victory over Katsuyori Shibata. An update is expected during Monday’s tournament special.
  • Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks will face El Clon, Mark Davis & Jake Doyle on Dynamite.
  • Will Ospreay, Francesco Akira & HENARE will face Brian Cage, Rocky Romero & Lance Archer.
  • Renee Paquette will moderate a sit-down between Ospreay and Omega ahead of All In.

Hangman Page, Brody King & Bandido vs. Jay Lethal, Blake Christian & Lee Johnson

Page, King and Bandido made their first defense of the AEW World Trios Championship against Lethal Twist.

The champions controlled the opening exchanges before the challengers isolated Bandido. Lethal teased removing his mask as Christian and Johnson kept the ROH World Champion away from his partners.

King eventually received the tag and ran through all three challengers. The fight moved outside, where King drove Christian and Johnson into the barricade before Page launched a moonsault from the ringside area.

Lethal Twist responded when Johnson hit a frog splash on King and Christian followed with a 450 splash, with both covering the champion. King kicked out.

Page later caught Christian with the Buckshot Lariat, while Bandido hit Johnson with the X-Knee. Page and Bandido then launched Johnson into King, who caught him and delivered a piledriver for the pin.

Ricochet appeared after the match and distracted the champions, allowing the Gates of Agony to attack from behind. Lethal Twist joined the assault as Page, King and Bandido were overwhelmed.

Don Callis addresses Hechicero vs. Brian Cage

Don Callis dismissed the possibility of friction within his group ahead of the tournament match between Hechicero and Cage.

Callis said the Don Callis Family had a guaranteed place in the quarterfinals regardless of the result. Cage and Hechicero shook hands before heading to the ring.

Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong discuss facing each other

O’Reilly and Strong spoke alongside Orange Cassidy ahead of their main event.

O’Reilly reflected on their long history as opponents, mentor and student, and eventually friends. Strong said that friendship would not affect the way he approached their tournament match and expected O’Reilly to do the same.

Hechicero vs. Brian Cage

Cage relied on his strength against his Don Callis Family teammate while Hechicero concentrated on submissions and attacking the limbs.

Hechicero took Cage down after attacking his knee, but Cage responded with a Death Valley Driver and later suplexed him from the apron back into the ring.

Cage followed with a DDT and powerbomb for near falls. Hechicero escaped a pumphandle attempt and attacked the legs before Cage reached the ropes.

A discus lariat put both men down. Cage later went for another power move, but Hechicero escaped and connected with a headscissors driver.

Hechicero then trapped Cage in a tight cradle to secure the three-count and a place in the quarterfinals.

Darby Allin addresses Kevin Knight

Darby Allin delivered a taped promo concerning Kevin Knight ahead of their meeting at All In.

Allin credited Sting with teaching him that he never needed to change himself to succeed. He contrasted that with Knight’s recent direction and promised there would be no more ambushes before Wembley Stadium.

Allin said he wanted the best version of Knight at All In before promising to leave him unable to recognize himself afterward.

Lio Rush looks for friends

The Rascalz discussed Myron Reed attempting to rebound from his loss to Mike Bailey.

Neither Dezmond Xavier nor Zachary Wentz had arranged the group’s eight-man tag match. Lio Rush then appeared and revealed that he had made the match because he needed friends.

Divine Dominion vs. Mazzerati & Rachelle Riveter

AEW Women’s World Tag Team Champions Megan Bayne and Lena Kross made short work of Mazzerati and Rachelle Riveter in a non-title match.

The champions dominated with their power and finished the match with Divine Intervention.

Jamie Hayter and Alex Windsor attacked afterward, looking for payback after Divine Dominion assaulted the Brawling Birds on last week’s Collision.

Hayter and Windsor attempted to put Bayne through a table at ringside before Kross pulled her partner to safety.

Nigel McGuinness vs. Katsuyori Shibata

McGuinness and Shibata began with extended mat wrestling before their exchanges became increasingly physical.

Shibata repeatedly sought sleeper holds while McGuinness attacked his opponent’s ankle. Shibata later trapped McGuinness in a sleeper and body scissors, but Nigel escaped by applying pressure to the damaged leg.

McGuinness blocked a PK with a kick to Shibata’s ankle and applied an ankle lock. Shibata eventually recovered and connected with the PK for a two-count.

The finish came when Shibata again secured a sleeper. As McGuinness faded toward the mat, he rolled backward and trapped Shibata’s shoulders down for three.

McGuinness therefore advanced to the quarterfinals.

Commentary later stated that McGuinness had suffered an injury during the match, with further information promised for Monday’s selection special.

Will Ospreay seeks help from Japan

Ospreay spoke about needing two partners to face the Don Callis Family.

He said the Death Riders were not an option and indicated that he would contact former United Empire allies in Japan. Ospreay specifically expressed concern over how Callum Newman might respond to hearing from him.

Lio Rush & The Rascalz vs. Jeaux Braxton, Frescomatic, Watson & Ice Williams

Rush immediately launched himself onto all four opponents before working with the Rascalz through a series of rapid tags.

The closing sequence saw Wentz hit a senton, Reed follow with a 450 splash and Xavier add another aerial attack.

Rush chose not to continue the sequence with a dive and instead applied a bridging submission to force the tap.

Rush briefly crossed paths with Bobby Lashley as the Hurt Syndicate entered for the following match.

The Hurt Syndicate & Shane Taylor Promotions in action

Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin teamed with Shane Taylor and Lee Moriarty following last week’s business arrangement between the Hurt Syndicate and Shane Taylor Promotions.

They took on Sonico, Jake Redondo, Ro Montana & Willie Montana.

Lashley and Benjamin dominated the early stages before leaving the ringside area while the match was still in progress.

Taylor and Moriarty continued without them, with Taylor finishing Jake Redondo with a package piledriver.

Tommaso Ciampa targets Casino Gauntlet

Tommaso Ciampa delivered a backstage promo about the Casino Gauntlet at All In.

Ciampa said his goal remained a future AEW World Championship opportunity and warned Andrade and MJF that they should hope he does not draw the third entry position.

Mercedes Moné vs. Zayda Steel

Steel scored several early near falls against Moné before the former TBS Champion took control with a Backstabber.

Steel rallied after the break with a stunner, strikes and a top-rope crossbody for two.

An attempted finish from Steel was countered into another Backstabber. Moné followed with the Moné Maker and transitioned into the Statement Maker for the submission victory.

Moné then used her Owen Hart Foundation Tournament championship belt to attack Christopher Daniels and Steel.

Willow Nightingale ran in and challenged Moné to fight immediately. Moné initially approached the ring before backing away through the crowd.

Nightingale closed the segment by telling her All In opponent, “I’m still smiling, bitch.”

Jack Perry confronted by Swerve Strickland

Footage from after Dynamite showed a bloodied Jack Perry reflecting on his Continental Challenge Cup loss to Jon Moxley.

Perry said Moxley had shown him the level required to become world champion and declared that he wanted to face wrestlers who had previously held the AEW World Championship.

He named Samoa Joe, Hangman Page and Kenny Omega before Swerve Strickland appeared.

Strickland told Perry that he was not yet ready to operate at that level. Perry disagreed, leaving a potential singles match between the two.

Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks challenge the Don Callis Family

Omega challenged three members of the Don Callis Family to face him and The Young Bucks.

Adam Copeland and Christian Cage then joined the segment and questioned whether the Bucks should be focusing on another six-man match ahead of their AEW World Tag Team Championship meeting at All In.

The teams traded remarks over their ages, with the Bucks saying Copeland and Christian were old enough to be their fathers. Christian responded: “Who says I’m not?”

Kyle O’Reilly vs. Roderick Strong

O’Reilly and Strong closed the show with the final match of the Continental Challenge Cup’s opening round.

Their familiarity was evident from the opening exchanges, with Strong targeting O’Reilly’s back while O’Reilly attacked Strong’s leg.

Strong drove O’Reilly back-first onto the barricade before returning to the ring and continuing his attack with a series of backbreakers.

O’Reilly responded with knees and kicks before transitioning through a hammerlock, guillotine and ankle lock. Strong reached the ropes and later caught O’Reilly on the turnbuckle with another backbreaker.

Both men traded strikes and suplex attempts in the closing minutes. O’Reilly eventually countered into a rolling pin to secure the victory and advance.

Strong shoved O’Reilly down after the bell but immediately appeared to regret the reaction. He helped his friend back to his feet, and the two embraced.

With all eight opening-round winners now determined, AEW will conduct another blind draw Monday to set the Continental Challenge Cup quarterfinals.
