Will Ospreay says final word before All In
The final episode of AEW Dynamite before All In: London, taped at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland, kicked off with an appearance by one-half of Sunday’s Wembley Stadium main event, Will Ospreay.
Ospreay reflected on the past year for him, coming back from neck surgery and becoming one of AEW’s top names. He said that, after proving he could wrestle again, he wondered if the surgery gave him a ceiling. “If I ever came back, could I win the big one?” he said.
The Briton talked about how he “made towns” in places like Glasgow when starting his career. The early hustle in his career was working on weekdays and wrestling on weekends to make ends meet. It was “all to show people that the UK is truly where the best wrestle,” he said. Ospreay fired off a list of Britwres legends, some no longer with us, and said he does it for them. After getting the local focus out of the way, Ospreay started to discuss his opponent on Sunday, AEW World Champion Kenny Omega.
Ospreay broke some news to the Glasgow crowd: Omega isn’t in the building. So, Ospreay looked down the camera lens and spoke to Omega, whom he presumed was watching at home.
Ospreay said he had respect for Omega, but that “went out the window” when he mentioned his son. He reminded us that Omega said Ospreay’s son will need a new hero after he loses at All In.
Ospreay said he won’t lose this weekend, as he has promised to everyone that he will deliver a title win. “You don’t want to f*** with a man that’s looking after a boy,” Ospreay said.
Ospreay ended his promo by saying that, on Sunday, he’ll show his son that “Heroes are just ordinary people that can do extraordinary things.”
A short but strong babyface promo from Ospreay here. Feels like a missed opportunity that one-half of Sunday’s main event simply isn’t around for Dynamite, but Ospreay did the best he could as a one-man segment.
Jon Moxley advances to Continental Cup finals
The first match of the night was a Continental Challenge Cup semi-final showdown between fellow Death Riders Claudio Castagnoli and Jon Moxley. As we know, the tournament finalists will appear as part of the huge Wembley Stadium pay-per-view this Sunday.
A brawl went to the ringside area early on, where Castagnoli swung Moxley around before launching him head-first into a guardrail. The ringside floor seemed way less padded than usual, and thus they were being much more careful with their bumps in the area.
Moxley, still hurt from that guardrail bump, was trying to get back into the match as they returned from a commercial break. After taking eachother out with clotheslines, a back-and-forth striking battle was won by Castagnoli.
An uppercut strike from Castagnoli was countered by Moxley into a cutter. A Death Rider was reversed by Castagnoli into a takedown for a Fujiwara armbar. While putting Moxley in a headlock, Castagnoli swung Moxley around again before taking him to the mat. Moxley was able to escape the submission and transition into a rear naked choke. He tried switching to an armbar.
Castagnoli got out of the submission sequence from Moxley, stood up, then gave the champ another swing in the middle of the ring. Castagnoli scored a near fall after a nasty uppercut put Moxley on his back. Another blow sent Moxley out of the ring.
Moxley kept his title run alive by just narrowly beating a count-out. Castagnoli kept the pressure on Moxley, hitting a Curbstomp then a Neutralizer for an incredibly close two-count. Castagnoli took off an elbow sleeve and set up for another uppercut, but Moxley unintentionally dodged the move by collapsing to the mat.
Moxley reversed a powerbomb into a Paradigm Shift for a two-count. He followed up with a Curbstomp then a Death Rider, but it still wasn’t enough to end the match! Moxley slipped in a headlock. Castagnoli briefly rose to his feet while trying to escape the hold, but eventually crumbled back down to the mat and passed out, giving Moxley the win in just under 16 minutes. Quite a fun showdown between two wrestlers who clearly knew each other’s playbooks.
Bucks, Cope & Cage face off ahead of All In match
The next bout saw Adam Copeland work alongside All In opponents The Young Bucks to take on the Don Callis Family trio of Brian Cage, Jake Doyle and Rocky Romero.
Nick Jackson was isolated by the Callis Family throughout the break. Nick found an opening after the show returned, but couldn’t tag out due to his partners getting wiped out by the Callis trio just moments earlier. Nick took out Cage with a hurricanrana out of the corner, then gave Copeland a hot tag.
Copeland tried to give Doyle a spear, but the ex-TNA talent countered with a pounce to drop him. The Young Bucks got back into the ring to help clean house. They attempted to take out Romero with a double-team superkick but nearly struck Copeland instead! Luckily, they were able to pull back in time, but this pause allowed the heel team to regain control of the match.
The Bucks took out Romero and Doyle at ringside, then prevented Cage from giving Copeland a springboard German Suplex. Eventually, they wiped out Cage and Doyle at ringside. After The Bucks gave Romero dual superkicks, Copeland delivered a spear for the pinfall win in nine minutes. A nice, quick little preview of this weekend’s tag title showdown.
The sole competitor on this weekend’s tag title showdown missing from this match, Christian Cage, appeared on-stage right after the match wrapped. Cage, who has been far less nice to the Bucks than Copeland, told them to “sit down and shut your mouths” as he spoke.
Cage said that, while the Bucks are legendary, they are still below Edge and Christian. He said that, while Sunday is a “dream match” to some, for him it’s just another appearance. Cage said that The Bucks haven’t had moves or events named after them. They countered: “Have they ever named a company after you?”
Cage started a brawl with the Bucks, causing Copeland to join in and lay hands on the tag duo. Copeland, not happy that he was forced into a fight with the Bucks, walked away as Cage posed to end the segment.
‘This is your last Dynamite as champ’
Before the next match, we expected to hear from AEW Women’s World Champion Willow Nightingale. But, cameras backstage found the champ laid out following an attack from All In opponent Mercedes Moné!
“I’m so sorry but you will not be hearing from Willow tonight,” Moné said. “Because Willow, this is your last Dynamite as champ.” Nightingale was left down and hurt as the show went to commercials.
Backstage, it was announced that Mark Davis is expected to appear in this weekend’s Casino Gauntlet Match. I enjoy Davis but he might be the least convincing possible title challenger at the moment. We also saw a promo from Chris Jericho, who said he will be in the gauntlet. He’ll be in a six-man tag match this Saturday to gear up for the match.
Against MJF’s wishes, Andrade shows up in Glasgow
Fans in the OVO Hydro shot to their feet, as Andrade El Idolo’s theme started to play. But after a delay, the Andrade theme transitioned into MJF’s anthem. The former AEW World Champion, MJF, came out on stage and tried to get some cheap heat by saying Scotland and Ireland are the same (not phased; this crowd cheered instead).
MJF said he paid some gentlemen to “warm up” Andrade tonight before they face off in the Casino Gauntlet match this weekend, so he shouldn’t be around tonight. MJF said he can do what Andrade does, wearing his own merch and fake jewelry, and taking photos with pretty women at ringside. The one issue this week, he noted, was that there aren’t any pretty women in Glasgow.
MJF found a “4” at ringside he planned to take a photo with. But he looked away for a second then looked back: Andrade snuck into the crowd and was suddenly on the other side of the guardrail! Andrade and MJF got into a brawl before the ex-world champ ran away to end the segment.
The latest – 9:19 p.m. ET: Nigel McGuinness secures Wembley Stadium showdown
The opponent for Jon Moxley at Wembley Stadium was found in the other semi-final match of this year’s AEW Continental Challenge Cup, as Kyle O’Reilly and Nigel McGuinness faced off. The angle going into this match is that McGuinness is trying to overcome the odds, heading into this one with a banged-up ankle.
O’Reilly was expectedly going after McGuinness’ legs throughout this match, hitting him with submissions, chop blocks and other strikes. They had a fun sequence of roll-up pins then submission attempts as the show returned from a break.
McGuinness got a near fall after coming off the ropes with a hard lariat. He followed up with an arm submission on O’Reilly, causing a tap-out for the win in 12 minutes. McGuinness is heading to Wembley Stadium.
I would’ve liked it if this one got a few more minutes, especially since a solid chunk of it took place during commercials. But, it was still a nice moment for McGuinness. We’ll see him against Moxley in just a few days.
