We finally have a new update on the John Cena Classic, a tournament which was initially announced five months ago.

During an appearance on The Today Show, Cena confirmed that the upcoming WWE tournament will begin in December.

“In December, I’m really excited about announcing the John Cena Classic,” he said. “We’re going to do an event based off of all the memory, all the nostalgia, the IP and the core values of the character, which is me, ‘Hustle, Loyalty, Respect,’ perseverance, virtue, overcoming the odds, and giving the vote to the people. Our audience is going to decide our champion on that night. It’s a really unique live event, I don’t know if it’s going to work. I’m still taking bold chances in the WWE space and I’m proud to be helping the WWE John Cena Classic.”

The John Cena Classic was announced back in May during WWE’s Backlash Premium Live Event (PLE).

At the time, it was described as a tournament that would showcase up-and-coming talents in the company. While little detail was provided, it was also mentioned at the time that a fan vote would help determine the tournament’s results.

After the announcement in May, WWE went months without mentioning the project again. It was reported over the summer that the tournament was expected for late 2026. Cena assured attendees at FanExpo Toronto in August that the tournament was still scheduled to take place.
