Report: U.S. Embassy orders ‘non-emergency’ staff to leave Saudi Arabia

U.S. Embassy staffers are being pulled out of Saudi Arabia, per a new report.

“Non-essential” U.S. Embassy staff and their families were ordered to leave the country on Wednesday, per a report from AFP.

Reuters was told that others in the Gulf region could be ordered to leave soon as well.

The order highlights ongoing caution in the country following numerous attacks from the Iran-backed Houthis. The group most notably struck Riyadh International Airport earlier this month, an attack which left 13 dead and over 300 injured.

The airport remained highly restricted as of early this week, Bloomberg reported. Many commercial airlines have temporarily suspended their service to Riyadh International, the largest travel hub in the country.

An upcoming boxing match between Canelo Alvarez and Christian Mbilli remains scheduled to take place in Riyadh 10 days from now. On November 7, just a week later, WWE is expected to visit the city for Crown Jewel.

Business conferences, a major annual tennis tournament, and an international golf stop set to take place in Riyadh have all been postponed due to the attacks.
