Forthcoming match/segment announcements

  • TBS Championship: Mercedes Moné (c) vs. Yuka Sakazaki at AEW Dynamite on January 29th

** We began with the customary brief promos to camera from tonight’s featured talent before Elton John’s ‘Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting’ plays.

** Jim Ross joined Tony Schiavone and Nigel McGuinness on commentary.

Samoa Joe vs. Nick Wayne

** First up at Daily’s Place was Samoa Joe vs. Nick Wayne, accompanied by Christian Cage, Mother Wayne and Kip Sabian. Cage and Sabian got into the ring with Wayne. As things looked lopsided before the bell, Katsuyori Shibata and HOOK came out to even things out.

Joe dominated despite Nick Wayne getting in some effective offense. The babyfaces on the outside effectively neutralized interference from the heels.

Kazuchika Okada vs. Komander

** The match began with Okada absorbing a lot of Komander’s fast-paced offense. Okada would then take over after delivering a DDT to his opponent outside the ring. Okada won pretty convincingly with The Rainmaker.

Okada shook Komander’s hand after the bell, only to attack him.

** Powerhouse Hobbs was waiting for Big Bill outside Daily’s Place. He attacked Bill on sight in the parking lot with trash cans, a metal barrier, and other plunder.

** Big Boom AJ and Big Justice were talking to Lexi Nair. Adam Cole and the rest of the Undisputed Kingdom joined them for a gigantic joint “Boom!”

Angelo Parker, Daniel Garcia & Matt Menard vs. The Undisputed Kingdom (Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly & Roderick Strong)

** This was a very entertaining trios match that saw the in-ring return of Angelo Parker after paternity leave.

In the end, Parker took the pin. Shane Taylor Promotions yelled at the competitors during the match. All six shook hands after the match.

** Max Caster issued an open challenge series, as the self-proclaimed best wrestler alive.

** Top Flight were backstage. Dante and Darius argued, and Darius challenged Lio Rush to a match.

Toni and Mariah meet ‘for the first time’

** Tony Schiavone was in the ring to introduce Mariah May and Toni Storm ahead of their match at Grand Slam Australia. Mariah told Toni she was “nothing” and a “joke”. She said she had never cared about Toni and added she would “get off on” humiliating her in her home country.

Toni responded that she was Mariah’s biggest fan and wanted to be just like her one day. She then hugged Mariah, who responded by hitting Toni with multiple slaps and belt shots. May spat on a prone Storm as she left the ring.

At this point, Toni said, “What makes you think I’ve forgotten?” as she transitioned back into her “Timeless” character. She hailed her own character work over the past weeks as “the performance of a lifetime.”

The crowd ate up this segment, which was very well done.

Brody King & Buddy Matthews def. Gates of Agony (Bishop Kaun & Toa Liona)

** A win for King and Matthews, as The Hounds of Hell. The crowd barked along. Kaun and Liona got in a lot of offense, especially during the commercial break.

** Backstage, Harley Cameron was with Big Boom AJ and Big Justice. They talked about their music.

** Penelope Ford and Thunder Rosa argued backstage. They agreed to a match.

TBS Championship #1 Contender Match: Serena Deeb vs. Deonna Purrazzo vs. Yuka Sakazaki vs. Queen Aminata

** Deonna Purrazzo stayed on the outside of the ring at the beginning, accompanied by Taya Valkyrie, who interfered several times. Purrazo joined the action when it seemed to be to her advantage. Harley Cameron came out to help as Purrazzo and Valkyrie double-teamed Yuka Sakazaki. Yuka managed to roll up Purrazzo for the win.

** Backstage, Okada laughed at the barking of the Hounds of Hell. He told Matthews he barked “like a bitch”. Buddy Matthews challenged Okada for a Continental Title shot, but he refused.

Big Bill speaks (and wants revenge)

** Big Bill was in the ring to talk about his assault earlier at the hands of Powerhouse Hobbs. He challenged Hobbs to come out. Security guards tried to prevent Hobbs but he made short work of them and he and Bill fought. Bill blasted Hobbs with a backpack, which was revealed to contain bricks, handcuffs, and a knee brace.

Bill dragged a bloodied Hobbs around the arena, hitting him with chair shots. Hobbs managed to rally as Bill reached for a brick. He then hit a belly-to-belly suplex as both men crashed through a table.

Don Callis family dinner

** A video aired of the Don Callis  Family at a dinner table. Callis lectured his stable about the threat of Kenny Omega and teased the addition of new member.

AEW International Championship: Konosuke Takeshita (c) def. Katsuyori Shibata

** Don Callis joined the announce desk for the main event. This was an excellent match, with the two mixing up grappling, strikes, throws and holds to great effect. It was a far cry from Shibata’s “grappling rules” match at the Tokyo Dome earlier in January, as he took plenty of big bumps.

Shibata had the upper hand as Don Callis left commentary and headed to ringside. A failed attempt at interference led to a big near-fall. Takeshita got the eventual win after a really excellent match.
