Jeff Cobb wraps up with New Japan.
New Japan Pro-Wrestling kicked off their Road to Wrestling Dontaku tour at Korakuen Hall and the third match on the bill was Hiroshi Tanahashi versus Jeff Cobb. It was Cobb’s final match for the promotion. As a result of him leaving, him and Callum Newman relinquished the IWGP Tag Team Titles.
On his way to the ring, Cobb was visibly emotional and the crowd had ‘thank you Jeff Cobb’ signs. The match concluded with Tanahashi securing the win via a cradle pin. Post-match, they shook hands and embraced in the ring. United Empire members Francesco Akira, Callum Newman, Templario, Great-O-Khan and Jakob Austin Young made their way to the ring. NJPW English commentator Chris Charlton joined them to translate Cobb’s comments to the audience.
Cobb thanked the behind the scenes crew, merchandising employees and the friends he’s made on the New Japan roster.
He stated that it’s a ‘sh*tty situation’ right now but he encouraged Callum Newman to take the ball and run with it. Newman is going to be challenging for the IWGP World Heavyweight Title at Wrestling Dontaku on May 4th. Cobb closed by saying it’s not a goodbye, but it’s a see you later.
In March, a report emerged from Fightful Select that Cobb’s name is on WWE’s internal roster.
