1985 NFL Super Bowl Champion and ex-WCW wrestler Steve “Mongo” McMichael will be moved to hospice care on Wednesday amid his ongoing battle with ALS.
A spokesperson for McMichael confirmed the news to the Associated Press this week.
67-year-old McMichael, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2021, has reportedly been held in an intensive care unit (ICU) with a ventilator as of late. His wife, Misty, told FOX 32 that he’s been “unresponsive” for the past two weeks.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a disease that affects the nervous system, causing a loss of muscle control, per the Mayo Clinic. The disease worsens over time, eventually becoming fatal. There currently isn’t a cure.
It was reported back in 2021 that McMichael was dependent on his wife for assistance with hygiene and eating due to the disease.
McMichael had a successful football career before transitioning to wrestling in the mid-90s. He won Super Bowl XX as a defensive tackle for the Chicago Bears, a team he played with for over a decade.
McMichael had an in-ring career in WCW from 1996 to 1999, briefly joining the Four Horsemen and having a run with the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship. Prior to his time with WCW, he also notably appeared at Wrestlemania XI, supporting fellow ex-footballer Lawrence Taylor as he faced Bam Bam Bigelow in 1995.
