The mayor of London, England hasn’t taken his eyes off a potential Wrestlemania event in the future.
Nearly a year since he had an in-person meeting with high-ranking WWE figures Paul Levesque and Nick Khan, Mayor Sadiq Khan has reiterated that he still has an interest in bringing the biggest professional wrestling show of the year to his city someday.
Khan’s latest pitch regarding the event came during an appearance at SXSW London this week in conversation with CNBC.
“Triple H if you’re watching, we want Wrestlemania to come to London … If WrestleMania came to London, my message to the team there is that we wouldn’t just have a great weekend, we’d have a festival, of you know, legends in WrestleMania coming to London, current stars, but also future stars as a well,” he said.
Khan said that he sees London as the “sporting capital of the world,” and that hosting a Wrestlemania in the city would help the event reach its potential.
“I think the potential has not been reached in terms of WrestleMania,” he said. “We are the sporting capital, in my view, of the world. And if WrestleMania wants to expand, the obvious place to come is London.”
London’s Mayor met with WWE’s Levesque and Khan last July to discuss the potential for Wrestlemania in his city. He described the chat with them as “really productive.”
When it was announced in May that next year’s show, Wrestlemania 42, would be moved away from the originally planned host city of New Orleans, many started to speculate about a potential new location. Among the many guesses fans had was London.
However, according to reports, it seems likely that if a trip to London ever happens, it won’t be next year. Las Vegas is nearing a deal to host Wrestlemania for a second consecutive time, per numerous reports. Bryan Alvarez of F4WOnline noted earlier this week that the agreement was “very close to being a done deal.”
