BJ Penn, the troubled ex-UFC fighter, has been arrested again.
The Hawaii Police issued a release that Penn was arrested on Thursday after violating a temporary restraining order and was arrested without incident.
The police did not state the name of the other individual involved, but it’s public knowledge that Penn’s mother, Lorraine Shin, was recently granted a protective order against her son by a judge. Penn has made claims that his family members had been murdered and replaced by imposters, with his mother believing her son is suffering from Capgras delusional syndrome.
Penn was arrested on May 26 on a charge of abusing a family or household member and then failed to appear in court the following day. Penn was arrested again after the Hawaii Police Department declared him a fugitive, with Penn blaming his absence in due to a diagnosis of COVID-19.
Penn has been released after bail of $3,000 was posted and is scheduled for a court appearance on Friday.
Penn, 46, is regarded as one of the greatest fighters in history and, for a period, was considered the top lightweight in the world. He was appropriately nicknamed “The Prodigy,” and his prime lasted throughout the decade of the 2000s. After three consecutive losses, he retired in 2014 and was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, but returned three years later with losses to Yair Rodriguez, Dennis Siver, Ryan Hall, and Clay Guida, with his last fight occurring in May 2019. He was released by the promotion later that year.
The former fighter has struggled mightily since his career ended with many legal problems and a mounting number of arrests.
