An eight-team tournament in Japan has been narrowed down to just two squads.
The semi-finals of this year’s eight-team NJPW x CMLL Fantastica Mania tag tournament took place on Sunday night as part of a card from the ATC Hall in Osaka, Japan, which drew a turnout of just over 900 fans.
The popular El Sky Team duo of Mistico and Mascara Dorada advanced to the finals in their main event appearance against Valiente Jr. and Futuro, going 16 minutes before finding the pinfall win.
After a high-flying performance in the main event full of big highlights, it was a backbreaker followed up by a big Shooting Star Press out of the corner from Dorada onto Valiente Jr. which earned him the pinfall win. Futuro was unable to break up the pin, as a moonsault from Mistico at ringside took him out of the equation.
El Sky Team gave credit to Futuro and Valiente Jr. after the match, encouraging the crowd to chant their names again.
An earlier highlight in the match saw El Sky Team deliver dual crossbodies to the outside, with Dorada coming off the ringpost with his.
The Rudo duo of Averno and Magnus won on the other side of the bracket, taking down the father-son team of Atlantis and Atlantis Jr.
63-year-old Atlantis, who is on his ninth Fantastica Mania tour, wiped out Magnus at ringside with a dive off the ring apron, bringing the match down to just Atlantis Jr. and Averno in the ring. Their back-and-forth battle went to the top rope, where Averno scored a Devil’s Wings to earn the pinfall in 11 minutes.
A post-match angle set up a CMLL World Historic Light Heavyweight Championship match between Atlantis Jr. and Averno for the February 26 Korakuen Hall card. Averno sent a message to Atlantis Jr. after the title bout was set up, jumping the 27-year-old and unmasking him.
The tag tournament finals will go down on Tuesday, when the Fantastica Mania tour returns to Osaka for a second night.
Earlier on Sunday’s show, a three-way between Hechicero, Soberano Jr. and Templario ended in a 10-minute time limit draw. Not satisfied with the result, the three continued to brawl after the match came to an end.
