Becky Lynch defeated AJ Lee to recapture the Women’s Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania night one.

The match marked Lee’s first appearance at the flagship event in eleven years.

The finish involved controversy centered around referee Jessika Carr. Lynch sneakily removed a turnbuckle pad late in the match.

Lynch pulled Carr in front of her to block an attack from Lee. She then drove Lee’s face into the exposed steel and executed a Manhandle Slam to secure the pinfall victory.

Tension between Lynch and the official escalated throughout the encounter. Carr previously caught the challenger attempting to remove the top turnbuckle pad and reattached it. The two women later engaged in a shoving match.

Lee capitalized on the altercation after Carr ducked a charge from Lynch. The defending champion executed a Manhandle Slam on Lynch, but the challenger managed to kick out of her own finishing move.

Lee also applied her signature Black Widow submission hold late in the contest. Lynch escaped the maneuver by grabbing Lee’s hair and pulling her to the mat.
