Gunther beat Seth Rollins on Saturday night, but he didn’t do it alone.
With some assistance from the returning Bron Breakker, Gunther scored a submission win over Seth Rollins in 15 minutes, ending their grudge match as part of Wrestlemania 42 Night 1 from the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Gunther was reeling late after taking loads of damage from Rollins. He kicked out from a Pedigree and Curbstomp at the nine-minute mark, took a superplex into a Falcon Arrow two minutes later, then was hit with another Pedigree and Curbstomp on the commentary table.
But, everything changed when Rollins rival Bron Breakker came storming down the stage and took out the former Vision leader at ringside with a huge spear. The move allowed Gunther to roll Rollins back into the ring and slip in his sleeper choke for the finish, ending one of the stronger in-ring performances of the night thus far.
The match marked Breakker’s first appearance on WWE programming in months. He had been out of the ring since this year’s Royal Rumble match, with reports stating that he was off TV due to hernia surgery. Breakker came back for seconds on Rollins after the match, giving him another hard spear at ringside after Gunther’s win.
The showdown between Gunther and Rollins is one of the more prominent grudge matches from this year’s Mania card. Gunther targeted Rollins in recent weeks of Monday Night Raw, citing his frustration with how Rollins acts like he’s one of the best in the ring.
While Gunther had his reasons for going after Rollins, he wasn’t the only one interested in the match. The Vision’s Paul Heyman, who has a vendetta against Rollins, had a vested interest in the match, as he wanted someone to handle Rollins at this year’s Mania.
Heyman thanked Gunther for taking up the challenge against Rollins on a recent Raw. Gunther told Heyman that he would need much more than “a big thank you” from Heyman for his deed.
The result evens Gunther’s Wrestlemania record at 2-2. After winning in his first-ever Wrestlemania match, he dropped bouts to Sami Zayn and Jey Uso in recent years. Saturday’s result ends that losing streak for him.
