Rey Bucanero has announced his departure from CMLL and the end of his 34-year affiliation with the industry’s oldest promotion.
He lost his mask back in 1999 to Shocker, but frequently put his hair on the line throughout the rest of his career.
Bucanero, 51, formed one of CMLL’s greatest teams with Ultimo Guerrero as Los Guerreros de Infierno throughout the first decade of the 2000s. The pair won CMLL’s tag titles on three occasions, including one reign lasting fourteen months from May 2002 until January 2004.

In July 2006, Bucanero beat Guerrero for the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship, ending Guerrero’s nearly four-year title reign. Bucanero would have a lengthy reign himself, holding the belt until May 2009 when he dropped it to Ephesto.
He held the NWA Historic Light Heavyweight title twice from 2011 until 2013 and again from early 2015 until late 2016, with a fourth tag title reign alongside current WWE performer Tama Tonga.
Last year, he competed against Felino in a Lucha de Apuestas (Hair vs. Hair) match, ending in a double disqualification. This was a rematch from the Anniversario show in 2011, where Felino defeated Bucanero for his hair.
The Cubs Fan at Luchablog noted that he was recently spotted at an independent card with Dr. Wagner Jr. and Pirata Morgan and promoted rumors of a pending exit from CMLL, which the wrestler confirmed on Monday.
