Arthur Jones, brother of former UFC Champion Jon Jones and a defensive tackle who was part of the Super Bowl XLVII-winning Baltimore Ravens squad, has passed away at 39. Jones’ death was announced by the Ravens on Friday.

“Arthur’s presence was a gift to everyone he encountered,” Baltimore Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta said in a statement. “His big, bright smile, infectious energy and eternal positivity created a presence that continuously uplifted others.”

The statement continued: “He was kind, courteous and enthusiastic – always displaying a love for family, teammates, and friends. We send our deepest condolences to the Jones family and all who loved Arthur.”

Jones was picked up in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL draft, chosen by the Ravens following a run in college with the Syracuse Orange. He played four years with the Ravens, including the team’s successful Super Bowl bid in the 2012-13 season, defeating the San Francisco 49ers.

Following the successful start to his career, Jones moved over to the Indianapolis Colts in 2014, inking a five-year deal with the team. He played alongside the team as they went to the AFC Championship, losing to the New England Patriots, who went on to win the Super Bowl that year.

Jones confirmed his retirement in 2017.

The 39-year-old grew up in a family of athletes. While Jon Jones chased a career in MMA, Arthur and his brother Chandler Jones both made it to the NFL. Arthur talked about the competitive relationship he had with his brothers in a 2012 profile piece on them.

“We want the best for each other, so whatever [we can do] to push each other to make us better, you know,” he said. “Your name is your brand and that’s something we take pride in, you know, making our parents’ name great.”
